Why not Gymnastics?
Wondering why we don't have Gymnastics.
Doesn't seem like a very expensive sport to compete in.
Seems like most of the parents have $ and may become big supporters.
Could help with Title 9 if you don't offer men's.
Any thoughts on it?

I have no idea how the numbers crunch but I'd absolutely love to have this sport in our conference.

RE: Why not Gymnastics?
I've thought about gymnastics before too. I think it would be an awesome sport to have. I'm not sure where each school stands on Title IX compliance, but most schools probably wouldn't want to fork out more money for this sport. You not only have to give the scholarships (12), and pay for coaches, but you have to have a facility to compete in.

And delicate athletic trainers. And there also isn't as large of a pool of athletes to pull from as there is soccer or basketball. Those would be my guesses. You would need a dedicated facility as well as the bars, vault, and spring floor are all pretty permanently placed.

My freshman year we hosted a club gymnastic competition in the rec. You'd think it would be near impossible to improve upon the scenery at TXST but for those few days it happened.

It's one women's sport that would draw crowds even if you aren't great. At UGA more people watch gymnastics than watch probably any sport other than football and men's basketball if they are having a good year.

A spring floor is a pretty permanent item. You can technically take it apart and put it together, but it takes a lot of time and people. The uneven bars and vault typically need to be bolted to the ground, so you wouldn't want that in the middle of your basketball floor.

PNC Arena has an ice rink under their basketball floor.

For a competition arena, yes the floor and such are brought in for the event. But gymnastics would need it's own dedicated practice area with stuff set up all the time.

RE: Why not Gymnastics?
Gymnastics is actually quite expensive compared to many other women's sports. I'd imagine insurance is a significant cost.

I'm sorry, I thought you were talking about the difficulty of permanent fixtures as they pertain to basketball courts and that it would be to complicated for a school to share the use of the facility. I was providing an example of NC State's basketball team sharing the facility with Carolina Hurricanes ice hockey.

We share the Cajun Dome with the Ice Gators during basketball/hockey season.
