We've got some "finals"
FAU 5-2 winner @ UAB
ODU blanks FIU 3-0
USM finally gives up a couple runs but hangs on to sweep Marshall by 6-2 score.

And Charlotte gets the tying run on with a 2 out DBU error in B9 - but next batter flies out. DBU 6-5 final over UNCC.

And our Sunday got even worse with UT losing their series at home against equally disappointing Tx Tech; meaning UT now falls out of the Top 100 in RPI, making our resume even more feable.

On the upside, 4 of our last 8 are against well regarded or ranked opponents. Maybe that will help on the computers.

RE: Other college baseball games during Rice's bye week (April 27-May 3)
We really need to win the conference. Both ECU and Tx Tech now have better overall resumes than us, as do four other teams in the AAC, and 3 - 4 teams in the Big 10. We really need to go 7-1 to close out the regular season, but certainly anything worse than 6-2 (with losses coming to UH and FAU) puts us squarely on the bubble; a place we don't want to be with our weak record vs. Top 25/50/100.

On the positive side, I think we go 7-1.

We got a little bit of RPI help from our PAC-12 friends today, as Arizona took their series from Washington State and Stanford salvaged a game @Oregon.

Which unfortunately, does not help Rice's weak record vs. Top 25/50/100.

Amazingly, Rice moves from #44 to #32 in a week they don't play. If we took off another week, #25!

Sweep this week, or even win 3 of four, and we'll likely have the same result.

Almost every year we have a guy who had been struggling, or not playing, emerge following the break. Last year it was Aquino, who carried us the final month of the season. My bet is on the Byrdman this year, though it would be a great boost if Big Jon was cleared to make his season debut.

My take is a little different in that I am not wishing for a difference maker to appear. I hope they just continue the growth and adjustments they have been making all year. They are playing better ball, in my opinion, just roll with that and everyone pick each other up. No one should feel they should carry the team because frankly no one has the talent to do so (although I hate to put any artificial limitations on players). They will live and die as a team.

I am torn on Jon's comeback this year. For his sake, I hope he is healthy and if that means pitching this year, good for him. But I have seen this movie with Savery in the staring role while everyone waited for his magical return to stardom. It was counterproductive in my opinion. While even false hope is hope ($1 Jon D Graham), I like Rice's chances the rest of the way with the players they have without the disruption of rehabbing the presumptive ace with two weeks before tournament play.

Respect the "trend" and play like you have the last couple of weeks. Enjoy. You aren't perfect, but neither is your opponent. This would be my advice to the players and staff. Remember you are Rice's present, but you represent their past and are the cornerstone of the future. Go Owls!

Note: perhaps too much coffee this morning, but I am starting to get fired up over Rice Baseball. I can't wait to see the post break, pre conference tournament part of the movie play out.

13th, despite winning seven of our last eight games, I think the only difference is that our pitching has solidified a bit. We're still making defensive miscues at an alarming rate....still guilty of 1 - 2 baserunning blunders each game...and still feature a Jekyl and Hyde offense. To get to where we want this team to be, we need a couple of our struggling guys (e.g., Byrd, Gray, Chandler, Pettitte) to step up and contribute in a more consistent fashion. As for Big Jon, to compare his injury to Savery's is ridiculous-- Joe had structural damage; Jon has shoulder impingement. Didn't CSC return to form after his tricep injury, and Jordan Stephens appears to be all the way back-- with improved velocity-- after his TJS.

BTW, we also strongly disagree on the level of talent on this team.

Noted.

I am not saying your opinion is incorrect, I am just giving note of mine. I believe it is possible for the team to advance in its flawed state. After all, I believe if you have more runs at the end of the game, you win. You don't get deductions for style points, inconsistencies, or fundamental failings - you just win or lose.

Wow. War Games.

I was growing up in The Valley in 1983 (Zappa nailed it). Those were peculiar but heady times; the height of the 80's zeitgeist, IMHO. I saw War Games at the Sherman Oaks Galleria.

Like, it was totally rad. For sure!

(Galaga is the best video game ever, BTW. Fact.)
