Do it correctly now and you won't have to re-do it in 20 years if JMU hits 30,000 students.

In regards to 14 FBS schools in a 250 mile radius, you could make that same point to nearly any school east of the Mississippi. If the attendance, interest, and fund raising is there to support FBS, then location close to other FBS schools isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Agreed.

And frankly, this new convocation center isn't just about basketball, I would assume. At least, I would assume that's not the message they're portraying. Rather, a new jewel of a facility representing JMU's overall commitment to being a top tier university. Not just a regional, state university.

Major selling point is that it will be the largest indoor facility in the Shenandoah Valley, and will attract conventions/concerts/trade shows that don't necessarily warrant the space of UVa's 15,000 seat arena that is 60 miles over the mountains to the east. The city of Harrisonburg is pumped about the facility.

It was over $500m at Seattle, in the $300m range for Arizona. Info was documented years ago in the Seattle Post Intelligencer.

$364 M in Arizona for fully enclosed stadium with retractable roof
$518 M in Seattle for open-air stadium with retractable covering

I am sure labor and materials were higher in Seattle, and the extra bracing needed to account for seismic activity in Seattle was a big portion.

I've read that Seattle's baseball stadium is the only retractable roof that can still feel like an actual outdoor stadium, rather than an enclosed building with a moonroof.

That makes more sense, and makes the subject-line misleading.

lol...how is the subject misleading? The vast majority of the events will be basketball games. It is being built by JMU, but will host other events (like any other bball facility worth a damn) when not in bball use.

How so? Primary purpose is basketball. Yes, it will be used for other events, but so are a lot of arenas/stadiums.

Plus, this is a sports board, so that is the relevant info.

FAU built a 30,000 seat Football Stadium for $68M a few years ago. $88M for 8,500 seat seems very expensive, that's over $10,000 a seat. The must be building classtrooms or admin space into that place for that kind of money.

You really can't compare costs of bball arenas to outdoor football stadiums. But to your point, yes, it has a practice facility, parking deck, and new locker rooms/training areas included. No classroom or admin space, other than coach's offices.

Auburn just spend $92 million for a 9600 seat arena in 2010.

USC built a 10k seat arean for $147MM back in 2006, and Oregon spent $227MM on a 12k seat arena. That is the going rate today for modern amenities.

I find it hard to believe that labor costs alone account for a 66% increase in the cost of a $300M design.
Anything in Seattle would require extensive protection from earthquakes. That's not really the case in Phoenix.
