Baseball Preview: Nationally-ranked Chanticleers Next Up For Diamond Hawks

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW welcomes nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina to Brooks Field on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. start. The game is the first of five for the Seahawks this week.

The Seahawks clinched a Colonial Athletic Association tournament berth last weekend with a 14-6 win at Elon. UNCW is the only program in the conference to participate in all 30 editions of the championship tournament.

Austin Easter will get the starting nod tonight for UNCW. Easter struck out a career-high six in a relief appearance last week at Elon.

UNCW enters the week ranked 35th in the latest NCAA RPI report.

The Seahawks visit Campbell on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. first-pitch before returning to Brooks Field this weekend for a three-game series with Delaware. The series opens on Friday at 6 p.m.

Coastal strikes first top 3rd, thanks in part to a rare error by Connelly with 2 outs in the inning. 1-0 Chanticleers.

How dumb was that play? UNCW looks to steal 2nd and the runner at 3rd stays put? Linkeous wasn't going hit into a DP. That's simply STUPID baseball period. If anything, bunt Linkeous and tie the game.

Hawks get 2 on but fail to score in the bottom of the 3rd. Solo HR for Coastal in the 4th makes it 2-0.

Still 2-0 in the 6th. Hawks have had some nice chances. Bases loaded for Golden last inning but he K'd on a 2-2 pitch.

5-0 Coastal in the 7th. 2-run HR as part of a 3-run inning off Barnes, who had pitched well in relief to that point

Finally on the board on a Dick RBI single. But it's 5-1 as we head to the 9th.

Not time to throw the panic switch yet. Lose this series to Delaware and yes, our postseason chances drop significantly. Right now our resume suggests we're looking like a Regional 3-seed.
