He stole that from Les Keiter who did radio for the 76ers.

RE: Mark Beier no longer with WSPD
I was not a fan of Beier when he first started doing Rocket games. He got better over time and I became more accustomed to his voice. I liked Keil, but he started to get really stale at the end of his career with Toledo.

Anybody else remember back to the guys that used to do the Rocket basketball games on TV? My first memory was of Orris Tabner then it was Cal Christenson and I can't remember the other guy right now. I really did not like that team at all. I don't know how many Rockets were killed in a game, but at least a dozen that drove to the basket were proclaimed to have been "cut in half" instead of just being fouled.

At one time in the late 50's Toledo basketball was broadcast on a pair of Toledo stations, the Tabner clan on WTOL and Gib Shanley doing play-by-play on WOHO. Shanley left WOHO in the early 60's to take over the radio play-by-play for the Cleveland Browns.

I think he did get a little stale at the end as well. He was still the best in his prime. Beier got better as he got more experience.

They need to market the product better as well (especially BB). Blackouts on WSPD is stupid. Not sure why they do, but must have something to do with $$$ - everything else does.

I spoke with the General Manager of Brondes this evening at a soccer game. Mark will continue to be the voice of the Rockets.

I'm a little late on one of the above quotes but "tickling the twine" was originally a comment made by Dick Vitale and not from anyone associated with UT BB.

RE: Mark Beier no longer with WSPD
Steve in NJ...no way to prove it but JK was "tickling the twine in 1970. Dicky V came much later on the scene I'd guess.
Couple of thoughts...JK was kind of out there with is home towns, nick names for the players, etc. As he got along though, he become stale. I think his level of trust with the head coaches seemed to slip (especially with Bob Nichols).
As for Mike B he is one of the best I have heard. He is better than many from bigger conferences and in some cases the pros (IMHO).
IMO we have had two great play by play guys... by a hair, Mark Bier is on top! Lets go Rrrrrrrrrockets!
