No, the low pay, long hours, lack of public support, lenient criminal justice system favoring the criminals and the way that the media convicts them before all of the facts are out there is driving the good ones out and keeping new good ones from joining. Like a couple of my friends....why get paid $60k a year working for a citizenry that simply doesn't give a damn about you and treats you like crap when you can go elsewhere like the private sector or do contract work overseas making a whole lot more money.

Let's be honest here. In the large cities in particular - are the risks of getting seriously harmed worth what a cop gets paid? For all too many that have the smarts to do something else - the answer is no. And since a policeman's pay will always be tied to taxes and tax rates, I don't expect any salary increases that would begin to attract the smartest available.

Hand held video devices (phones) are proving to be a game changer.

Then you need to prepare yourself for having to hire substandard candidates. It's like everything else....you get what you pay for.

Not disputing your position Kaplony, but the thin blue line doesn't do itself any favors in attracting talented people. In some areas the the bureaucracy is almost as bad as your average school district.
