That's horrifying.

They're talking about the state funding spent per student going from 3,500 to 660. I get that there are some cuts to be made and administrative bloat is real, but there has to be a better way than just being that reckless.

If LSU is that deep in trouble, then I'm afraid to inquire about La Tech.

Kansas is about to close their schools now because the state ran out of money. Brownback's tax cuts are not working quite the way he said they would.

I think most believe that SEC sports are bigger than the universities themselves. We'll see what happens with the athletic budget.

I know a university that rakes in billions and yet, it had to close its football program.

But, money had nothing to do with it.

I think LSU will find the money to play football.

LSU will cut English and Math before they cut football.

This could be the future of the University of Alabama. Right now the state of Alabama is facing a huge General Budget short fall and the Legislature is not very keen on raising taxes. They will most likely take money out of the education budget which could lead to cuts at UAT.

True, but this could be a big deal for us, as it might force LSU (or more likely, the other Louisiana universities) to openly admit that Schwarz's accounting approach is the correct one: we're not cutting football because it actually does make money for the university since a transfer payment isn't really a "cost."

Once another university breaks ranks with the NCAA and embraces reality, the OSKR report makes a great leap in legitimacy.

I don't know the LSU situation, but if anything like the one at Bama, the pending "90% increase in tuition since 2008" figure is probably near what students at both campuses in the UA system will see in the fall of 2016 or 2017.

The Bama Athletic Department is currently receiving about $151 million annually, but the UA academic school gets none of that until the AD has spent all it needs. Then what's leftover goes to the school's General Scholarship Fund and currently over half of that would probably go to out of state students.

The State Legislature has already voted to delay the first annual payment promised to repay the O&G Trust Fund that they borrowed from a year or so ago. How long can they resist the temptation to steal from the SETF to keep from raising any taxes? They keep talking about how much it has, but it only looks good compared to the General Fund Budget.

And it may hurt us even more than them, since we receive more state appropriations. Louisiana's $1.6 billion deficit doesn't make Alabama's $700 million look quite so bad.

If the SETF is raided to support the General Fund Budget (as has been done in the past) the loss will be to ALL levels of public education since they all share the same budgetary "pie". If the "pie" is smaller, the slices will have to be smaller - for everyone. The income for the prevailing split of 70% for K-12 and the 30% for all post secondary (JUCO & 4 year schools) will be reduced, and for the UA System, the BOT will determine the amount each UA campus sacrifices.

Since the Athletic Department in Tuscaloosa and the medical center in B'ham are currently the only parts of UA operating "in the black", they will be shielded from the greatest sacrifices. It will be the rest of the system that pays whatever price is to be exacted.

I wonder how much of UAT athletic surplus ends up on the academic side vs how much of UAB medical side ends up in UAT pockets???

This is only indirectly related, but it was very interesting. I didn't realize how bad it was.

There is about to be a lot more medical money in UAT pockets. The whole point of the changes in progress at UAB is to take the administrative money that the undergrad side of UAB gets for running the medical school and instead use it to pay off bond debt for all the new construction in Tuscaloosa.

That was part of my point. As Auda ibu Tayi said in LOA, I'm a river to my people so is UAB to UAT in financial matters though not through our leadership or choice but as slave & master

Not saying you're wrong or anything, but how did you come to this conclusion? Heard through the grape vine, informed opinion, etc?
