Serious question, but do many people support Israel simply because of the book of Revelations? I've read about and talked to people who appear to give Israel a lot of love because they want to see the temple rebuilt. If it gets rebuilt, in their minds it means the end times begin. It seems that this is a major component in people's minds on why Israel is important.

This doesn't mean that I hate Israel. I can see why they are important. But the support I see from people for Israel seems to be larger than what I would expect.

I support Israel to nearly an unconditional level. It has nothing to do with the bible. In fact, as I Catholic, I don't consider the bible that important.

I support Israel because of:
1. the Holocaust
2. the capability of the Israelis to defend themselves against outrageous odds, eg. the Six Day War, etc.
3. Israel has built the only democracy in the Middle East and has a vibrant economy, yet no oil. It has an outstanding university system that has been created despite its relatively small population and history.
4. I think that Islamism is a threat to the world and Israel is our only outpost of sanity in the region.
5. Israel is the only country in the world that billions wish to wipe off the map.
6. The world is populated with anti-Semites. Places that reason is supposed to reign, ie. Europe, have displayed an intellectually bankrupt hatred of the Jewish people.
7. The US benefits from Israels existence.

I suppose guilt is a big reason for many people. While Israel acts as a counterweight to Islamists in the region, a case could be made that on balance that portion of the conflict in the region that exists solely because of Israel's existence makes our support for them a net strategic negative. If they (Israel) had never existed, there would still be conflict between Islamists and the West, and control of oil fields would still be a strategic concern. Without the Holocaust guilt, I'm not sure there would be enough support for Israel to justify the treasure we send them. But we would still sell them weapons, because that's a good market for us. And we would still invade countries like Iraq to protect our financial interests in Middle East oil.

I support Israel because:

1) Jews have been abused for 3,000+ years.
2) They're good people, not psychotic killers ... yes, I just stereotyped.
3) They're the only modern democracy in the armpit of the world.
4) They're our ally with common interests.

No, I'm not Jewish and the Bible has nothing to do with my support.

While I have moral support for the State of Israel...I have no compulsion to support it with the fruits of my labor any more than any other country.
