Richard Ross...Mr. Irrelevant?
Unfortunately I was on an important phone call and couldn't hear anything that was said but there was just a special on ESPN2 with Mel Kiper and Todd Mcshay and Mel chose Richard Ross as his Mr. Irrelevant, aka the last guy picked in the draft.

RE: Richard Ross...Mr. Irrelevant?
I don't think Ross has any chance of becoming an immediate contributor since he will have a huge learning curve, but in a year or two (if he has NFL hands), he could be an absolute steal.

Sounds to me like being drafted at all would be great for him. Does that guarantee him a spot and good money for a season? To go from basketball to NFL draft would be quite an accomplishment.

I listened to Selig's interview tonight (thanks odubleedblue) and he said it was 4.6 and that he caught 43/45 passed at a recent workout.

Mr. Irrelevant...says ESPN, tongue-in-cheek, as they give him exposure on national television.

If that's true, he's going to be a late round steal! He'll be [one of?] the most athletic TE in the NFL. Once he learns the limited route tree that TEs have to deal with, he'll get quick reps in obvious passing situations. If he learns to block, he'll be a stud TE.

I believe that was a standing 40 time.

It doesn't guarantee him a spot. He would still have to earn a spot on the final 53 man roster. However, if he didn't earn a spot on the 53, he would likely be signed to that team's practice squad. This is likely given how raw he is in football. Teams also don't give up on players that they draft (even in the 7th round) as they do players they sign as undrafted FAs. As far as salary goes, he would sign a 4 year deal, which is standard. He would probably earn somewhere around $400,000 this year if he makes the team. That money would not be guaranteed though unless he makes the final 53. He would probably receive a guaranteed signing bonus of around $50,000 though.
If he makes a team's practice squad, he would earn $6,300 for each week he is on it. So if he was on the practice squad for the entire season (17 weeks), he would earn somewhere around $107,000.

Richard Ross...Mr. Irrelevant?
Is there a link to a video or recap to what was said? I believe I was watching the beginning of it but I can't stand Mel Kiper Jr. so I switched the channel. I would love to see what they actually said about Ross though

I'm sure they will show it again. I'll look through the TV guide.

I always thought of him as an incredible athlete, but not as an especially graceful one. I saw some very fluid moves in many of those patterns.
Thanks for posting the video, R8R. And best wishes on this new path, RR.

Watched the video with the intense movie music playing over it. With a bit of refinement (maybe a year on the practice squad) I think Ross could be an NFL TE that would make Old Dominion proud.

We've talked about how weird it would be for the first ODU player drafted by the NFL to actually be a basketball player, but on top of that, he'd be a TE, which we haven't used in years.

I'll take the double irony if it means another Monarch in the mainstream sports world. Ross, like Baze, appears to know how to handle himself on the mic as well. ODU education is quality stuff, and the world shall know sooner rather than later.
