Massive Budget Cut Proposal Worries LSU/Louisiana
http://www.eab.com/daily-briefing/2015/0...upt-school

http://www.nola.com/politics/index.ssf/2...rt_m-rpt-2

Quote:The Louisiana Legislature is closing out its meetings this week without having made much progress in finding universities and colleges and others more funding. Louisiana's higher education community is facing an 82 percent funding cut if no extra state money is found. The change would bring state funding for LSU from around $3,500 per undergraduate student to $660 per undergraduate student next year.

This is purely a political move by LSU. I feel that they will never actually go through with that plan as it was do more harm than good.

However, this will get the LSU alums in the Legislature (and there are a lot of them), to take up measures to make sure that LSU doesn't get hit as hard by the budget cuts. Need to protect the almighty flagship.

Unlike the federal government, the states can't print money. Current spending levels are unsustainable. This is going to happen more and more in more places as the years go forward.

States that rely on oil prices are all going to take a hit at some point or another in the future as long as prices stay this low.

Up next, Alabama.

Yep. Maybe those tenured professors and that endless University administration need to take a pay cut...................nah - just sock it to the students.

The cost of college education has far out paced that of the general economy, maybe it's time they went on a fiscal diet.

The minute you cut tenure professors/salary is the minute these professors go to industry or the private sector and you lose your teaching base/credibility.

With neither a degreeI in business nor economics I wont profess a solution. I can say however that cutting higher and secondary education is about the last we should ever do or support.

But taxing the rich sounds nice :):)

You don't think there's a glut of educators that could replace them?

OK, where do you start? What are your suggestions?

How about eliminating 20% of all state administrative positions.

If this were a stateschool like LaTech or ULL yes but when you cut your flagship to barebones it's not a good sign. Youre no longer cutting average and replaceable.

I generally think that higher education - just like government generally - is overloaded with admin costs. Those areas could absorb the cuts and no one would scarcely notice.

Of course the education groups ALWAYS cry that the sky will fall if they have to tighten their belts at all. Always!!!
