The Dow Jones Industrial Average: A Spectacular Chart

NOTE: The Dow Jones Industrial Average was not formally created until 1896. On this chart, the line before that time period represents the basket of US stocks that were trading before the DJIA index was created.

The chart above could almost be viewed like a piece of artwork. The historical context of it is simply mesmerizing. It shows the Dow Jones Industrial Average since 1789.

It is, essentially, one of the most comprehensive visualizations of modern equity markets.

In addition to the chart plotting price, it also highlights noteworthy historical events. Wars, crises, and major political turns are all listed on the chart.

To make this chart larger, click here. And when you scroll down, you’ll find other charts like it ranging from gold to crude oil.

This is why long term investment using dollar cost averaging is an almost failsafe route to financial freedom at retirement. This should be shown to HS students in some type of course about the facts of life. Nothing has created more wealth for more people than the stock market.

Yep, which is why I don't try to time the market and day trade. As long as one is properly asset located then one should be ok, long term.

You can put that market on steroids with day trading.

I would be curious to see the DJIA priced in gold.

I day trade and I use the profits off of every trade to keep the stock i made the profit off. So let's say I make 2000 off of Verizon with a position. I exit the position but keep 2000 in Vz. stock. That profit continues to grow. I keep my bankroll for the next opportunity. I just came up with this strategy a couple of years ago and it works.

I really center it along the x date and y date. It works and it works wonders.

I would be curious to know how many day traders out there wanted to crucify the "oil speculators" back when the price of gas was well over $3/gal...

Get ready for it! This market is all BS. Based entirely on free money from the Fed to Hedge Funds with no interest.

What matters is NOT the price ... but what you can actually BUY with it. I'd like see that chart adjusted for inflation (REAL inflation, not the government's nerfed inflation statistic). And then I'd like to see separate charts that after that price it not in dollars but in ounces of gold, ounces of silver, barrels of crude oil, etc.

Me too, but I posted what I found.

One interesting thing to me is the plateau all throughout the 70's. Makes me think about that time a lot. I wonder if we are setting in the midst of another plateau with all that bis going on now.
