Why would UAB have to go to Atlanta to hire the AD at BSC? Are they safer at a distance?

Was there an article a week or two ago that had the finalists names? If so, please post. I remember reading in passing but would like to see the finalists' names again.

I have not seen an article with finalists names.

Knowing how the communists work, I don't believe they would announce it up front.

Has anyone ever known a school to announce finalists for a position up front? Maybe reporters report finalists based on leaked information, but no school announces finalists. Not even communist schools.

My understanding is that meetings with candidates are happening today and tomorrow. They'll probably announce finalists next week.

They had better not announce finalist, lest they lose every candidate. The only announcement you should expect is the announcement of the new AD.

That said. I have always disliked JDJr. Many years ago, when he was BSC coach, I was able to spend some time around him and found him to be brash, a hothead and generally a jerk to those who worked under him. He may have matured in 25 years, but those are my first impressions. His public persona (and that may be just his persona based on the job he was doing as SEC game commentator) has been pro SEC.

If he is the next AD, I have general negative impressions, not based on who hires him, but based on preconceived opinions.

That said, if he'a hired, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. I will not give him milk and cookies though, because my dealings with him 25 years ago.

I did a lot of work with BSC Athletics and know Joe Dean Jr. fairly well. Like MB, at first I did not hold him in high esteem. But I have also have seen JDJr. mature a lot in the last 10 or so years, and he has become a very likeable guy.

Having said that, I have no idea whether JDJr. will be the new UAB AD. He told me several weeks ago that he was not interested in the job. But in the world of college athletics, people change their mind and a few weeks is a lifetime.

Is it a consideration that for Watts, UAB President is a "destination job" while being UAB's AD may not be. He can retire 10 years from now having made over $8 million in salary and get TRS benefits based on that level of income.

If Joe Dean Jr will be a catastrophic hire, we should fill Dr Jones' inbox en masse.

Well, if that is the case, I full expect that the three finalists will all get a lot of emails warning them off. I'm sure they will appreciate that.

They might or might not, but anyone who wants to see the AD search committee succeed will consider that willful sabotage. You don't know who they are talking to, there might be a genuinely good candidate whose reasoning does not fit in the boxes you have constructed. People are complex and not everyone thinks in the same way.

I don't understand this mindset. What is this going to accomplish?

Nothing good. It's the internet equivalent of stomping your feet and throwing a tantrum.

*edit* I put this in another thread, but it bears repeating. I talked to someone who is on the AD committee yesterday who said this:

"I am extremely excited about one particular candidate and if we don't get them because of this made up nonsense I will be livid."


Please consider the idea that perhaps there really are good candidates out there and we might hire one. If someone gets hired now, they are not automatically an idiot or a tool of the administration. Consider the idea that they see the potential, think they can make a difference, that they see it as a challenge.

We're all wound real tight. I could make a killing selling tranquilizers and antidepressant meds to UAB fans along about now.

I feel confident that if a candidate for AD is mature enough to have those virtues, he/she is probably mature enough to make their own evaluation of the job based on all points of view. They will not be scared off by any by any "tantrum throwing posters".

The real challenge is going to be getting a good candidate in spite of the instability of the UAB athletic programs, not what any one might say. Hardly a single major decision about UAB's athletic future is going to be made by ANYONE in a UAB office until the conference choices are ours to make. ALL decisions until then are to be made by others.
