I'll bite. Just for fun, Is a conference comprised of...

UTSA, New Mexico State, UTEP, Rice, North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Arkansas State, ULL, Southern Mississippi, and Texas State more appealing than what we have in CUSA? It certainly is more interesting on a regional level, but I don't know that it's better for us.

Well get ready for that conference. If we don't get out of CUSA, this is likely where we are ending up. There are already fractures between the western and eastern elements of CUSA, I can see a WAC split coming in the near future.

Sad but seemingly true, and that is what Karlgaard is working hard on turning around. I think the leadership team we have of Karlgaard, Leebron and Tudor can do something about it this time. Keeping my fingers crossed.

RE: Dr. K's Mid-year Update
Didn't know whether to start another thread on this... But since this thread has swerved back to athletic future I think it belongs here...
I got a call from a nice young Jr. from Lovett last night. He said he was calling on behalf of the Owl Club. Wanted to make sure I was going to contribute for next year and politely asked if I might increase my yearly donation. We then had a very good conversation about student interest in athletics, efforts by the AD to increase that interest, etc. He reported that at Lovett the new college officers include an Athletics Officer that will try to keep the students updated as to schedules, marketing efforts, etc. Apparently it's gotten some pretty good support from the Lovett Students.
He said that over the past few seasons there has been growing interest in football, with away games being broadcast (somehow) in the Commons and students getting together and watching with food, beverages, etc. According to this student, the Bowl appearances have stimulated a lot of interest among the students.
I came away from the conversation feeling pretty good about our new AD and his efforts to increase interest in what Rice athletics has to offer...And starting at the grassroots level where it's really important. The Student.
Bravo Dr K!!

As an aside, splitting out specific posts is harder than you'd think, especially if you don't catch it and do it early. Only a few posts aren't really part of the OP, though they may contain lots of unrelated commentary.

I'll see what I can do

McMurtry College has a similar student position and in general seems to be quite appreciative of its varsity athletes. Also, two of the year-end awards that the college gives are in sports: one for the outstanding intramural athlete, and one for the outstanding varsity athlete.

Very good news. The bond between athletics and (now) alums must be forged during the time in school to build a fan base.

Something that roughly 40 years worth of athletic directors failed to understand.

Interesting timing on that tweet. I wonder if it means something may be coming along those lines.

I doubt it, but it is something he's been focused on for some time. I can tell you that he has been seeking to establish coaching endowments from the day he arrived on campus. He initially tried to steer the baseball endowment to be toward a coaching endowment before fully embracing the broader and general purpose scope that the RBI Club and I preferred.

My guess is that it would be requests for >=$2,000,000 checks to establish various endowments.

He did, however, snort too much cocaine in the mid-1980's to see his once promising career fizzle.

Sorry, was a Mets fan during that era and couldn't resist...

??? As a lifelong Mets fan, I don't ever recall Doc being referred to as Dr. K or even Doc K.

That's where the shortened nickname "Doc" came from.

There's a Sport Illustrated cover.

And a Time magazine cover to boot.
