please don't dilute the G5 any further.

The last two they called up are doing decent.

And those two have real people show up to the games. I haven't done a study, I would guess, past history would indicate the more successful (moving up) programs have greater attendance.

Probably should have made that plea to conferences who were raiding others causing FCS schools to be moved up. Pleading with the Sun Belt over the situation is sorta useless.

completely different circumstances.

Not really. Raiding started at the top. Our search for new members is a result of that.

He is blaming the last domino and the last domino doesn't accept the blame. He should be yelling at the guy who knocked the first one over.

EKU:

Enrollment: 16,454.
Location: Richmond, KY (Pop. 31,364) Lexington-Fayette MSA: 485,023
2014 Athletic Budget: $11,938,695
Additional Tidbits: Two National Championships claimed (1979 & 1982), 21 conference titles (all OVC), 552–344–38 All Time Record.
Closet SBC Member: App State (263 Miles)
2013 Average Attendance: 8,617

-I think one very solid thing EKU has going for them is their location-King Karl has been very adamant about the potential expansion member "being located in the east" as to give App State a travel partner.

-budget certainly isn't tops compared to current SBC members, but still higher than ULM and UALR.

-from what I've gathered reading and looking at whatever pics and vids of their facilities I could find, their facilities I feel are pretty on par with most SBC members. Roy Kidd is the only one that needs to be updated and that is being taken care of. (their facilities page here http://www.ekusports.com/sports/2013/12/...32631.aspx)

-Re-establishing a presence in Kentucky which albeit isn't a MEGA state to have in terms of football, but certainly in the middle of the "ideal geographic footprint"

-I could only find average attendance from 2013, but their average of just over 8,000 is a little low (but I think you can make an argument of raising up to the FBS level would certainly raise those numbers).

-I don't really have a negative for EKU-if they can raise their athletic budget, renovate Roy Kidd and be truly committed to being competitive at the FBS level I think it'd be a solid get.

Missouri State:

Enrollment: 24,489
Location: Springfield (Pop. 160,246) Springfield-Branson MSA: 537,631
2014 Athletic Budget: $15,495,062
Additional Tidbits: No Claimed National Title, eight conference titles (6 Missouri Intercollegiate Athletic Association, 2 Gateway Collegiate Athletic Conference) 631–408–40 all time record
Closet SBC Member: Arkansas State (217 Miles)
2013 average attendance: 8,700

-Missouri State certainly has impressive enrollment size, decent athletic budget and being located in a large city like Springfield would be a plus for conference.

-Again from google research, they seem to be a little bit better off facility stand point than EKU (link to MO State's facilities http://www.missouristatebears.com/facilities/)

-What they lack from football success certainly is made up for in their men's basketball program (6 NCAA tourney appearances, 9 NIT Appearances, 4 regular season conference titles and 3 conference tournament titles).

Probably biggest negative I see is location-(Would have a 7/5 split membership western to eastern side)

UT-Chattanooga:

Enrollment: 10,297
Location: Chattanooga (Pop. 167,674) Chattanooga TN-GA MSA: 528,143
2014 Athletic Budget: $14,779,261
Additional Tidbits: No National Titles, 6 conference titles, 512–511–35 all time record.
Closet SBC Member: Georgia State (118 Miles)
2013 average attendance: 9,922

-The Mocs are a bit of wildcard; certainly not even warm name that has been speculated in recent months; however according to the NBC news affilate out of Chattanooga, they were approached to join the SBC along with GA Southern and App State back in 2013 but turned down the offer (http://www.wrcbtv.com/story/21813635/utc...fbs-move). The fact we made a past offer still makes me think they could be in play potentially

-Getting the belt back in Tennessee would be huge (especially in a large market like Chattanooga).

-Finley Stadium is quite a beautiful football facility (certainly tops compared to EKU and Mo State's). The rest is pretty decent (http://www.gomocs.com/ViewArticle.dbml?D...=204975345)

-Whether it's a big or insignificant deal, UTC doesn't sponsor baseball

-As of now, the biggest draw back is the fact they've already turned SBC down to remain in the FCS level.

The other hot candidates-JMU and Liberty-Despite having impressive facilities, budgets and average attendances, I just don't see them ever being legitimate contenders to be in the belt simply for the fact that the Dukes have no interest in the SBC and I don't see the Flames ever getting the necessary votes needed to get an invite.

And to the two Jacksonville State fans trolling SBC expansion talk-your football stadium is nice, and it's solid that you guys averaged a little over 15,000 in 2013 however with Troy and South Al already established members in the Belt NOOOO WAY you guys ever get an invite.

This is a good list, and I think each would be a worthy candidate. Others have been mentioned in articles in the past. Below is a list of the ones I remember have indicated a desire to move up just to see how they compare with the initial list. I added the MSA population for the programs above and the programs below. MSA is probably a better indicator for programs in a more metropolitan area.

I understand the immediate stated conference need is a program in the east to balance the conference. Even so, all three are in the current footprint and are well within the western boundaries created by the two Texas full members. Lamar is almost due south of Missouri State. Sam Houston State is about 120 miles northwest of Lamar. All three program have a good history in several sports, and have long a history with many current Sun Belt members.

Jacksonville State:

Enrollment: 8,659
Location: Jacksonville, AL (Pop. 12,548) Anniston MSA: 112,249
2014 Athletic Budget: $12,155,646
Additional Tidbits: 1 Claimed National Title (D-II) , 19 conference titles (5 Alabama Collegiate Conference, 1 Mid-South Conference, 9 Gulf South Conference, 4 Ohio Valley Conference) 531–391–40 all time record
Closest SBC Member: Troy (159 Miles)

-Other Sports: Basketball - No Divison I appearances
Baseball - 4 NCAA D-I Appearances

Lamar:

Enrollment: 14,889
Location: Beaumont (Pop. 118,296) Beaumont-Port Arthur MSA: 404,872
2014 Athletic Budget: $15,880,004
Additional Tidbits: Restarted football in 2010 after dropping the sport in 1989. 5 D-II Conference championships
Closest SBC Member: Ragin' Cajuns (135 Miles)
2013 average attendance: 8,379

-Here's link to Lamar's facilities: http://www.lamarcardinals.com/facilities...ities.html Not included is a new on-campus softball stadium currently under construction. Link to architect's renditions: http://creative.brwarch.com/2014/07/15/l...-underway/

-Other Sports: Basketball - 6 NCAA D-I appearance, most recent 2012 (1 Elite Eight, 4 round of 32) 4 NIT Appearances
Baseball - 13 NCAA D-I Appearances, most recent 2010

Sam Houston State

Enrollment: 19,577
Location: Huntsville, TX (Pop. 38,548) No MSA, but part of Houston-Baytown-Huntsville CSA: 6,371,677
2014 Athletic Budget: $13,894,640
Additional Tidbits: 1 Claimed National Football Title (NAIA) , 11 conference titles (1 Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (D-III), 4 Lone Star Conference (NAIA), 2 Gulf Star Conference (D-I FCS), 4 Southland Conference (D-I FCS) 469–448–34 all time record
Closest SBC Member: Texas State (171 Miles)

Of these 6 only Missouri St screams FBS to me but I think EKU, UTC or Lamar should be competitive in the SBC.

RE: My Thoughts on the Rumored Potential Expansion Candidates
at this moment none of the schools look very promising, EKU just isn't ready, they would have to spend a lot of money in a short time to even think about the move up, realistically, probably 2 or 3 years. Compared to the rest Chatt is in good shape financially, but they have no fan support, and an administration that hasn't put together a comprehensive plan, they don't know what the @#%# they want to do. Missouri St, and the Texas schools, probably will not happen until App gets a traveling partner, you want to see the App administration go ballistic on Benson, bring in another West team. Liberty, financially is ready, but no one in the conference wants them, and the most logical choice, our idiots to the North, JMU, whose administration is holding out with hope that any day the big Ten or ACC will extend an invitation, because, as their administration has told us in the past, they are superior in both academics and athletics, and its an insult for them to be in a conference with the likes of GS, ULL, and APP.

It's fairly amusing because FIU and FAU were not ready. They had to move early. Now they are in CUSA with everyone begging to get back with them. Guess it worked out.

WKU was seen as ready, even with a small stadium. But of course, they struggled mightily and were the joke of FBS for a while. They still have the small stadium and are ok.

EKU, JMU, Liberty, Missouri State, whoever are going to have their problems coming into FBS and chances are they will overcome them over time.

Come on man, even Sam Houston fans are saying they aren't ready yet. Attendance is bad (putting it mildly), majority of facilities are a wreck, and community buy in is nil.

I do believe though... If their AD started a campaign to move to FBS (similar to how we had "The Drive"), attendance would improve, donations would improve, and with those in the pocket, facilities could be upgraded (though if memory serves, they had a really nice baseball complex). But that's like a 3-5 year plan to just get ready for the move.

please don't dilute the G5 any further.

Speaking of diluting the FBS these are the Winning % of Ohio's Head Coaching staffs since 1985. The MAC would do well to add FCS football power NDSU. Of course that would be bad for Solich & Ohio!

It's program support (both attendance and $$$$) that concerns me.

RE: My Thoughts on the Rumored Potential Expansion Candidates
Right now, I'm for adding a non football school like UNC Greensboro, and letting football ride as is for a little while. It'd cure the travel problems in the non football sports, and as a league we'd be able to keep our options open in regards to football. Low risk. Schedules are more fair for App, and other schools have a travel partner to not have to go to Boone on a one-off.

Please . . . No more non football adds . . . .

At this point, I don't want to add someone just for someone else's convenience . . .

If we're gonna add, add the best program for the Belt going forward . . .

At the moment, that be JMU or Mo St. . . . . IMO

OR. NMSU for All Sports, But I know how crazy that makes da App.

You can call it convenience if you'd like but App st needs a travel partner. SBC made up for every loss except wku...that one upset the apple cart. Don't necessarily care who leaves, just write the check and find this league some sta stability.

All I'm saying is a non football add in the east, which would open the door to divisional play, helps everyone, and it probably makes NM State or an all sports invite to MoSt much more appetizing.

RE: My Thoughts on the Rumored Potential Expansion Candidates
To me, if we are adding an Olympic sports university, that university needs to push us to a two bid league.

Two problems with that:
1. I don't think there is a team out there that would be able to do that on it's own, and
2. If there is one, they ain't joining the Sun Belt.

Then again, I'm not for adding a football team unless they have the ability to compete in FBS now (and my threshold is really low... just don't finish ranked in the triple digits), or if they have a good Olympic squad.

please don't dilute the G5 any further.

Speaking of diluting the FBS these are the Winning % of Ohio's Head Coaching staffs since 1985. The MAC would do well to add FCS football power NDSU. Of course that would be bad for Solich & Ohio!

Bryant - 18%
Lictenburg - 16%
Groble - 50%
Knorr - 23%
Solich - 56%

well, at least you didn't try to make a point by cherry picking data.

I've no problem with App getting a travel partner, would just prefer that we not have anymore non football adds . . . . 04-cheers

RE: My Thoughts on the Rumored Potential Expansion Candidates
Since we are looking outside the box here, any reason we can't entertain a state school in South Carolina in a major metro area. SC is loaded with football talent and only has two FBS football schools.

The Citadel
Enrollment: 3,500
Endowment: $270 million
Location: Charleston, SC pop. 127,999, MSA of 712,220 (76th in US)
Additional Tidbits: The Citadel has won two Southern Conference Championships, played in and won one bowl game (Tangerine Bowl 1960), and participated in the Division I-AA (now FCS) playoffs three times, with a record of 1-3. As of 2010 the football program had a graduation success rate of 90%, compared to the Division I average of 65%.
Closet SBC Members: App State 299 miles, Georgia Southern 152 miles, Ga State 306 miles.
Stadium Capacity: 21,000
2014 Average Attendance: 9,671

Pros: Their football stadium is on par with the rest of the conference and overall they have nice facilities. Located in Charleston, have dedicated and loyal alumni, get a foot into SC, makes travel easier for App, Ga State, and GaSouth.

Cons: Small enrollment, limited budget currently, limited history of success in most major money sports. Tough sell to move up, due to military focus of administration. Weak football attendance has some to do with limited success, and some due to low enrollment numbers.
