Glad to hear - I had intended to go this year for the first time and wasn't able for the cliched "family reasons"... Put me down for next year...

I wonder if we ever tried to schedule Arkansas. They always traveled great in all sports including basketball.

Rice has seen increase in season tickets over last 3 years compared to #s released in UAB study, per a school official

Joseph Duarte @Chronicle_Owls · 18h 18 hours ago
In 3 of most successful seasons, Rice season tickets down from 4,856 in ’12, 4,424 in ‘13 and 4,165 in ’14, per #s from UAB football study

No mention of season ticket sales that I can recall. He was asked about playing 'big name' football opponents at NRG. He talked about his attempt to set up a game with LSU at Rice Stadium - LSU demanded the entire gate for the game, we would only get concessions and parking. Said they couldn't work out a deal.

Adding to chrisc's report, Dr. K. said conference affiliation was about Performance, Politics, and (I think) Timing. He also talked about the OOC football games coming up in the next few years (Baylor, Army, Houston); I think these are all done deals.

Those OOC games were specifically mentioned as being played at HRS. They are done deals and first steps toward bringing better opponents to HRS while continuing to improve the stadium infrastructure. Other OOC games will still be played at NRG until we can guarantee that it is financially feasible to host teams at HRS and not lose money based on the required payouts.

JK also said that playing big time basketball games at Tudor required us to improve our RPI. The downside of losing at Tudor to a low RPI program is way too high for teams to assume the risk.

You got PPT right. Performance, Politics, and Timing.

I might be unique in this but Im a bit disappointed by all the football and basketball talk during the height of the baseball postseason. Seems a bit disrespectful to a marquee sport actually. Could these caravans have not waited until the summer or early August? Seems like were set up to not really have any major athletics events for all of June and July...heck August even if you see the first football game isnt until September.

Then again, probably a good distraction from a really disappointing baseball sesason.

Not just you, but I am glad to see them expand to cover other sports as well. The timing doesn't bother me, unless they schedule a stop during one of the playoff games.

Karlgaard mentioned the timing, but really just in reference to the temperature for an outdoor event in Texas (spring vs summer).

Coaches caravan has been football only in past years. This is the first i remember other coaches coming along. I believe JK's goal is to use these for the entire athletic department and not just a single sport going forward. Jenny Volpe was not in Austin, but she was in San Antonio. The more the merrier as far as I'm concerned.

JK did mention that he intends to start doing these events earlier in the spring to drive higher attendance and visibility. The were previously held in July and had low attendance due to summer vacations. May is better, but not optimal in his mind.

Timing certainly didn't allow for WG to make the trip this year.

Yup. Sounds like he's gotten the "talking points" and how he is going to be measured. I've said all along this coming season is make or break for him as we have effectively plateaued the past 3 seasons (with regards to who we beat, and whom we're competitive against). It's due time we beat some Top 75 teams, and are at least competitive against top 50 teams.

I hope this is the season we can put to rest the idea that there is any sort of "preseason" or however it was described in college football. I hope we take each and every game seriously and try to win every single one, instead of favoring some over others, now and in the future. This can only happen if it is demonstrated by action on the field and in the wins column.

I'm glad to actually hear that JK is trying these things. Man, the LSU situation is difficult. Now that A&M is in their division in the SEC, they really don't need a Rice game. Maybe we can get one of the Mississippi schools to bite? Maybe Auburn or try the 3-0 vs Alabama angle? How about some ACC teams? (Clemson, Ga Tech, Fla State, Miami--can we do better than we did last time against them? What happened to the Wake Forest games?)

He mentioned it in DC as well, said they thought attendance was affected by doing it in summer. If you push it a little earlier, more people are available

Yep.

I don't know about y'all, but it seems like my work loads really starts to increase around May, and is a bit quieter between Jan and April.

Later in the year may not benefit season ticket sales as much.

I've been to most all of the Rice events at St Arnolds and its a lot of fun. I encourage everyone to come out. The beer is fresh and cooold. They'll have something to eat also.
The coaches are all available and make a point to visit with fans individually or in groups, and will answer any questions. They are really good guys/solid citizens. If you attend one function you will be back, I promise.

Could someone ask Rhoades if they are still hoping to add any more players for 2015-16 or whether they are done (no transfers)? Just curious since Rice was in on some transfers that went elsewhere.
