The weather may be rather cool so I'll be in jeans and an ODU T-short! I think I heard there will be fireworks after the game!

I personally like a Ship's Bell or that"AHHUUGA" diving horn thing from a submarine idea better than the cannon. More Navy related. Someone at the Caravan mentioned using a foghorn. Also like that since the stadium will probably be on the river.

As to the reviewing of upgrades to Foreman Field....Selig gave the impression that doing that was more to actually putting on paper that the costs would far outweigh the benefits for those stll calling for keeping FF..

3 or 4 years ago I talked to and received permission from a VP where I work at Newport News Shipyard (an ODU grad) to talk to ODU about getting the bell from the Big E for such an idea. Enterprise has been decommissioned. What ship better identified the Navy and the Norfolk manual base? I emailed Dr Selig with the idea. If Selig had been interested then that VP would have approached the Navy. ODU declined with the comment "we are pleased with the traditions we have in place and are starting for ODU football." Within 3 months of his refusal he sent out an email asking for ideas of traditions to start using for football.

Not a person I talked to has ever thought that was a bad fearing the bell as the team enters the field! I spoke with several naval officers at the yard and none sounded displeased.

Most want the howitzer back. The ringing of the bell would be a great idea at the start of the 4th quarter, but not at the start of the game.

I love the idea of the bell. Norfolk is much more and Nave town than a canon town! I might bring it up at th Coaches Caravan to Selig. I will even reference the Big E's bell with your permission???? Were you planning on coming?

I would like the Idea of ringing the bell at certain times. like after each score ringing it for every point scored or a cumulative score....which may have been a problem those few tears when we would score in the 60's!!!

Put the howitzer on top of the lighthouse we will build.
Fire it towards Richmond at appropriate times.

I like the dive horn too. But you definitely would have to use it for the defense, since by definition, it means "you're going down!" COGS

Thank God! I was going to be pissed if we didn't do something to celebrate this years fun BB ride! I'm afraid that this late date of the BBQ will keep Ebondo, Ross, Arledge and, of course, Palmore from being there.

Anyone else going to the Washington DC one? I was thinking about going, but I'd be the only one I know there. Other than asking coaches and administrators questions, what do you do? How long do you stay?

I went to the one in DC last year and it was a lot more informal than the other ones. it was in a pre-game area at Nats park before the game like this years will be(albeit under a tent in a private area) and they didn't do the speeches, etc like at the other ones. I did get to chat with Barefoot (we played a game of corn hole too), Brian Scott and Rich Nagy and Selig (coach jones was running late and I never saw him; never got to talk to wilder either, as everyone wanted his attention and he was taking a lot of calls too). I got to ask them anything I wanted and they were all very cool and laid back about it...then we all took off and went to the baseball game. I didn't sit with the ODU folks as I was meeting other friends there. the coaches had suites.

I also met a dude that all the coaches knew and buttered up to that's interesting in hind site b/c he was from Under Armor.

I won't be able to attend this year. it should be nuts b/c the Nats are playing the Yankees will sell the place out even for a Tues (last year it was a Wednesday, vs CIN at 4pm - caravan at 2pm. that kept attendance down)...I went by myself and it was fun. don't let that stop you if you can't find someone else to go with.

i went by myself the first year i went. have a few drinks (if you drink) and get chatty. i was sitting at the bar talking with a guy that turned out to be Jim Ducibella (long time writer for the pilot I believe) - conversation with him was good. last year i went with someone and we got 10 mins solid talking to Wilder, then about 20 mins talking to Brian Scott.
