Sen Waggoner says 41,000 people go to UAB everyday- students, faculty, staff - who have no representation on UA Board of Trustees

Quote: Bethany Davis @bethanyWSFA · 5m 5 minutes ago

Sen Smitherman also supporting this bill. Says this is another form of diversity. Says UAB provides 60% of ALL revenue in the UA system

Quote: Bethany Davis @bethanyWSFA · 5m 5 minutes ago

Sen Smitherman thinks UAB needs it's OWN Board of Trustees. Compares UAB to kids who have grown up and ready to leave home.

Evidently we didn't have enough votes in the committee yet. BOT lobbyist are swarming the building. It needs more work. At least one Senator on the committee has aleady come over. We have 19 more days in this session. As Jack says we have we have an uphill fight, but we continue to fight! Call members of of the Senate Education Committee.

How can the votes not be there? Did they vote? Who is opposed?

Carrying it over definitely not a good thing for us. Gives the BOT more time to lobby.

Do not know exactly as to what happened to Jabo's Bill.

But in general a bill can be voted on immediately (usually only on Non- controversial bills). Scheduled for a hearing at the next committee meeting or at a special time.(best we could have hoped for) or carried over -maybe be heard at a future meeting or not (probably not a good thing) or tabled (generally ended for session)

Generally would be up to chairman if and when it is brought up every again. This is the cowards beat way out -NOBODY is on record. Which most politicians love

IMHO for Jabo's Bill my reading of the tea leafs will probably not be heard from again until after its too late to actually pass a bill for this session at the earliest. I assume Jabo did not have an open majority of the committee. But we will probably know for certain if it's not brought up in next committee meeting. I hope I have guessed wrong

RE: Greetings from the Senate Education Committee Meeting
A lobbyist story. Bright intelligent young idealist from out in the state comes to goat hill and actually tries to stick to his good government positions. He gets invited to the Auburn-Alabama game and has seats on the 50 with access to a suite. As he gets up at halftime, he runs into a lobbyist who has been trying to get his vote. "How do you like your seats? It's a little different being one of the big boys isn't it?"

Suddenly he realizes he has a choice be a good government outlier, or enjoy the fruits of his success.

My father in law used to tell me that you didn't have to buy Alabama politicians because the small venalities are the ones that get them.

It was really, really unlikely that we would win the first time out. A great thing for #FreeUAB, but not a likely outcome.

This is going to be a long fight. They've fed at the trough too long to give it up easily. But we can and will win. I grow angrier and more determined with each day that passes.

And props to Roger Smitherman for standing up for what's right in the (literal) face of evil.

RE: Greetings from the Senate Education Committee Meeting
FreeUAB is a war of attrition. Throughout history Freedom fighters and rebels have rarely won outright battles. The majority of these were won by grinding down the enemy and making it an unpopular fight for them. Look at the money being spent on PR firms and lobbyists this can't continue forever and as they spend more and more tax money fighting us with PR companies, they will become more and more unpopular and start losing the power they depend on.

It took free the hops a few years to win, but we won. The original bill to raise alcohol content of beer was given the "shroud" award for being the Bill that was DOA with no chance of passing. We continued the fight and won major victories in the following years.

RE: Greetings from the Senate Education Committee Meeting
As I recall there is a meeting scheduled between some members of the BOT and Senator Wagoner on Thursday. This may be the reason for the delay, it may be an attempt for everyone involved to try to reach a compromise. Yes I know the word compromise is considered a bad word by some, but the devil would be in the details if UAB gets something out of a compromise.

Not sure if you are getting it mixed up.

Some on the BOT are meeting with the faculty senate, not Jabo to my knowledge.

I could be wrong though. It happened a few years ago I recall.

Can you clarify who voted (if a vote occurred) to carry over the bill? We need to focus our calls on those Senators.

Greetings from the Senate Education Committee Meeting
Senators on our side asked for it to be carried because they did not yet have enough votes. They consider carried over to be better than voted down.
