Because freeing slaves wasn't why the North went to war and the Rebels soldiers weren't fighting to keep slavery in place.
According to the Wiki Article on the 1860 census, 12.6% of the United States population were slaves. No, I do not find that POV rational at any point in time.
No mourning of the dead from you I see. I guess you're of the opinion they deserved to die because they allowed slavery to persist.
No, I'm of the opinion that I cannot think of higher reason to fight than for the freedom of your fellow countrymen.
Which would have been fine, but you know that's not why the North fought.

Ulysses S Grant
Was Grant inebriated when he said this? I have to ask, since he spent his life drunk and died a drunk and a pauper!

We didn't fight WWII to end the Holocaust, either. Doesn't mean it can't be used to validate the lives of the men who died to topple an evil regime.

On one hand he was quite the brutal tyrant. Suspending habeas corpus and slaughtering a bunch of innocent commonfolk in the South (oh wait, not everyone in the South was a slave-owning racist?!). He deported folks who didn't agree with him and censored free speech. Promoted and enforced the Fugitive Slave Law. Was racist as hell.
On the other hand, he did lead the charge to establish liberty for those who had been oppressed for a long stretch of time.
He did the minimum he had to do to keep the country together. Every decision he made had only one test: would it increase or decrease the chances of keeping the nation together?
Thank God there was no ACLU; we'd be two countries right now.
What do you mean by he was responsible for "slaughtering a bunch of common folk in the South"? Who did he slaughter? And he deported folks? Who did he deport? And he was racist as hell? I'd like some details.
Remember ... this was a war, not croquet. Bad things happened from 1861 to 1865.

Lincoln was probably our most tormented President. The issues that confronted him were staggering. I have always felt that war was not the right answer...and I believe he felt so also. It was a different time. Circumstances forced the issues.

Revisionist history has made Lincoln' Legacy what he is today.

Sometimes revisions lead to the truth, though, so making that statement means nothing of value.

None of this is cut and dried. There are truths and lies on both sides of this issue.

He was the most selfless and intelligent man ever to hold the office.
