I think these changes are just p.c. crap.
Around AState private vendors sell shirts that say "My Indian name is Red Wolf".
But for the most part our fan base likes Red Wolves much better than they liked Indians (beating TAMU in our first game as Red Wolves didn't hurt)
In the two years after the switch the number of University plates issued by the state with our logo more than doubled because fans liked it better.
To avoid offending we had dumped any sort of cartoon or hostile character logo (Jumping Joe and Runnin Joe)
and replaced them with what we called Letterhead Joe.
Wow that was something you could get behind.
So with a few holdouts our fan base has loved the switch.
During the process the university appointed 11 different committees to represent different university related groups. Red Wolves had been pushed by my website for years as an alternate logo and Red Wolves was the only name every committee endorsed.
To add to the story, the school hired a New York design firm to help in the rebrand, of the names that made it to the end Red Wolves was the one they rated lowest. They rated highest various train themes because we were built next to a railroad. No one who was ever late to class or was woken up early by the &*%$ trains wanted that choice (ie. anyone who attended AState). The chancellor did not like the logos they presented. A Little Rock firm offered to do a design on spec. The chancellor went to the university creative services office and told them if they wanted in, they could submit their own design. Their design was the clear winner and it adapts well to other uses. Now all the major logos associated with the school are student or alumni designed and we like them.
