Since RC didn't write the letter to Cal, there were other parties to that letter. And the NCAA isn't well known for keeping secrets.

And I'm sure RC and Cal were the only people in the AD offices that knew about the letter and investigation.

RE: CA advertising for new Tiger Football Beat writer
I recall Wolken saying he made a mistake on the NCAA - Calipari thing. That the lesson learned was that he should have just made an FOI request every week to the University ---

Wolken mighta been a pain at times...but damn we were INFORMED.

The fact that Dan Wolken didn't know the NCAA was investigating Derrick Rose's SAT and that the University of Memphis got a letter about it months before the public found out speaks to the job Dan Wolken was doing as Tiger basketball beat writer.

If Wolken was on his job, Kentucky would have been scared off by the Cal investigation.

to be fair, Cal had RC sit on the letter from the NCAA, convincing him that they would face the music together...and to keep it quiet.
Of course Cal jumped ship before then...leaving RC high and dry.

true, but if Wolken even suspected it, he could have filed one of those freedom of information things.

Dan is good at what he does but has burned a few bridges. It is not like folks are going to talk to him about much.

was that true at that time? it does seem that when someone leaves from the CA to go to a national gig, they torch those birdges on their way out.

Could we get an academic beat writer for the CA? When Rhodes College plans a little science building or Old Mrs sneezes in a classroom from black bears, it is all over the CA. The CA should cover more on the academics at The University of Memphis.

From what I have seen over the years, The University of Memphis gets more news coverage by the CA than any other media outlet. Head and shoulders more than any body else. But more would even be better.

Not completely true. I heard it in January. Wolken didn't "break" the story until May, after Calipari was long gone. The person who told me was in a group of about 7 who knew it. One of them was close to RC. I told a couple of people I trusted, and I'm sure everyone else did, too. And we couldn't have been the only ones who knew.

Did you post anything here, in this forum, that even vaguely referred to it?

Of course not. I'm just contesting the statement that nobody knew b/c RC kept it quiet. I absolutely know some people did, apparently just no media.

Read this thread title as "new football bat writer" and it surprisingly makes sense.
