We'll pick up good some points when the outdoor T&F championships hit. I think we'll hold our own in golf. Tennis? Not so much.

At this point I want App to finish in the top half of the conference and beat GaSo. I'd take that and be happy.

RE: Bubas Cup 12 April 2015
After round 1 Troy leads the WG championship (301). TXST 2 strokes back (303), App in 3rd (305), USA 4th (306). Round 2 has started.

Was supposed to be April 13-15 but 2 days of rain/bad weather forced it back. Looks like they're doing 2 rounds today. I guess 3rd tomorrow.

You can sort of follow along here:

Which shows where your time, money and effort is and isn't being spent towards equal and a fully well rounded sports program. So it's ok to suck in everything but the money sports then? Tell that to UT or UA or some of the other P5 schools. They put an all out effort into every sport; which is what most of the SBC schools are making an effort to do. We may have mainly sucked as a football program but we're making strides in that area while improving our other 15 sports. Basketball is just going to take more time than the others because it was left to rot by our AD.

Time and money shouldn't be equally spent equally across the entire program. G5s have to spend their resources wisely and invest in what generates more revenue. It should be spent on where the fans demand the most and areas for the Athletic Department to get the most ROI. Eventually, you can spend more money and time into the other programs. Rising tide lifts all boats. Winning at money sports rises the tide.

TROY recently made some coaching changes in track, golf, and tennis. The men's and women's teams now have their respective coaches where there was just an individual coach for the respective sports. It has made a difference. Women golfers are trying to repeat...

I don't care what CatMom says... I agree. Hell, I'd take a top spot in football, and a top 3 in the other money sports (do we consider baseball a money sport? If not, I want to add them in, as my new category is a) football, b) money sports = sports I even marginally pay attention to (baseball, basketball), c) title IX compliance).

I prefer to have an overall winning record against our rival in the most important sport, so I'm good for at least 2 more years, hopefully longer.

Me too. Football, baseball, men's basketball, golf, in that order. The other sports...not interested.

Doesn't matter if you're interested or not (Golf? really?). These are still your student athletes and they still represent your school. They should be given the same chance to win as every other sport. To not make an attempt at funding them or hiring the best coaches one can is not right nor fair to them.

PS - your support of them is as important to them as a football player but I guess you wouldn't know, or don't care.

I don't mean this as a knock on GaSo but their women's sports have over the years been a bit lacking. Not every sport every year but overall not doing a great job to say the least. What would it take to have such a great men's program and then a not so great women's program to bring up legitimate Title IX concerns. GaSo is funding the schollys for both men and women in a way that is in the spirit of the law I would assume. But could there be Title IX implications if a college was really throwing the women under the bus with lack of quality coaches, S&C opportunities, and general lack of support/concern by the admin at the school. I am not suggesting GaSo is doing this but is there a point where this could be a problem for any school?

On a side note, I have never heard of a fan of a school that is never in the race for the conf sports cups to state they love the cup race and I never hear many fans that have a chance to win a sports cup talk bad about the chances. I suspect some of the GaSo fans are taking what they can get as they have never been in the running for any conf cup since they joined a conf in modern (post bringing back football) times that I am aware of. I am sure one reason I do all of this work, besides the fact I like numbers, is that App is usually in the hunt so I do follow it. And I like to see top-notch performance in ALL of App - all sports, club and varsity, academics, research and community support by App. But that is just me (and most of App fans in general I think.)

They are given the chance to win... they have the opportunity to earn it. I'm sure we hire the best possible candidate for each team and of course each team gets funding, not sure where you are getting that from.

All I am saying is that teams should get $ that is proportional to the impact they have on the bottom line and the visibility of the school. The idea that they should be equal is naive.

To be honest, most of us have never heard of these Cups. I didn't until I came to this board.

Is this done at P5 conferences?

I'd rather beat a P5 each year than win a Conference Cup.

I'm not sure if every conference has it, but I know the SEC does off hand.

SLC has a commissioner's cup. Men's/women's and overall. TXST won it many times. Our Women took their Cup a record number of times.

I was making a general statement on funding as a response to this being said

Quote:Time and money shouldn't be equally spent equally across the entire program. G5s have to spend their resources wisely and invest in what generates more revenue. It should be spent on where the fans demand the most and areas for the Athletic Department to get the most ROI. Eventually, you can spend more money and time into the other programs.

I didn't say you have to pay the same amounts. It has to be proportional, though, to have that success in the others.

I think the vast majority of conferences do these cups in some fashion. I know of DII schools and NAIA conferences that do these cups. Some give overall and some give men and women separate and some give 3 cups. Lots of HS conferences do this at the conference and state level. There are national cups as well that deal with NCAA performance and the NAIA has something as well.

There are 351 men's DI basketball programs. I don't know if any DI schools are DI and not carrying men's basketball, but there are at least 351 D1 schools. There are 108 schools without ANY points. In that context you are a little bit better looking.
