O/T: Hurley's Contract at UB
Seems UB and Hurley executed a MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) which details what would be in the contract which would need to be approved by the SUNY trustees.

I assume this contract is typical for MAC coaches, i.e., loaded with incentives so that a successful coach will be well compensated for his success.

And also contains a pretty stiff buyout clause if the event that Hurley would (he did) leave before the fulfillment of his contract.

So it appears that UB will get $375K out of Hurley since he is leaving.

It would appear to be that way ($125K x 3).

What I found interesting is the provision for a 'review' after two seasons with provisions for extending the contract.

I assume this is common in coaches' contracts.

We did it at BG and got Louis Orr for an additional two years (total of seven years). He won the conference his second year, was rewarded with two additional years and we never approached a decent year after that.

I'm all for rewarding and extending contracts, but I think you wait until at least AFTER the third year. I know the idea that kids want to know the coach is going to be there all four years, but in reality, even if the coach has the contract showing five years or more remaining we all know that he can be gone in a moment.

Good point.

Sometimes a coach wins in year one or two with his predecessor's players.

By year #3 and 4 the players are mostly (or completely) the new coach's recruits.
