West Memphis is 870 and DeSoto is 662.

I doubt if the Memphis msa needs an overlay since the metro area is already divided up into 3 different area codes wih much of the growth in the 662 area code for suburban Mississippi.

I like the 901 helmet idea. For those worried about it alienating fans outside the area code in other areas of West Tennessee, etc., the university is called the University of Memphis. It's already geographically specific, and that hasn't turned fans off.

Exactly what I've been saying for the past several years.

HOMETOWN TEAM!

I'm not an alum, but I'm a proud member of TIGER NATION!

Quote:“I think it’s important that we embrace the city, regardless of what school you went to or where you are originally from," Fuente said. "If you live here in this community, we want to go out of our way to make sure we represent it in the right way. And also that people in this community can feel some pride in their football team. Our local kids have really enjoyed that part of it, and even our kids from far off have embraced that part of just kind of always trying to represent the right things.”

Fabulous, fabulous quote from Fuente. The helmets are great....I'll be shocked if we get to use them in most games, but I love them.

FWIW, I'm not a big fan of the new unis or the field.

BUT if players dig it, I'm all for it.

We aren't recruiting 50 year old white dudes on a message board.

No, but coaches are attempting to recruit the 40-50 old's kids to play for the university. And the university, I can assure you, IS attempting to raise funds from those outside the 901 area code.

The helmets were awesome. If you want tradition lets go back to just having players numbers on the helmets. Or better yet go back the the old tiger logo with the tiger standing on his hind legs.

I wish we could do a throwback jersey. That would be cool.

Yep. I also like the Tigers in cursive on the helmet. Would be cool in blue and gray.

It's not about where you or some fan lives. It's about where the team is. The name on the jersey is MEMPHIS.

Yep. 985,000 people live in the 901 area code. Less than 1% would fill the liberty bowl.

Actually, it would take about 6%, or 1 out of 16 people.

I changed my mind after seeing gulf coastal girls crypto twitter post. Apparently the 901 stuff is a cool fad. If it helps us win I will paint it on my forehead for games. I'd probably uncool it though

Tucson is a metro area, 1 mill, 520 only. Indy is 317...

901 helmet is a cool idea, I just don't like the font. But it's better than being boring.

Also, I wouldn't read too much into whether 901 limits the appeal of the school. Just like if the St. Louis Cardinals made something with 314, I wouldn't begrudge that, or the StL abbreviation if/when it's used. Despite the Cards' national, if not global fanbase. Otherwise do we want to get rid of the name "Memphis" from the name of the university. It's silly, right? It doesn't need to be University of Metro Memphis, or University of TAM. If you're in the metro area, until the other area codes become more prominent, everyone understands what 901 means. The name, the address, the zip code, the area code. It'd be weird if they were to embrace a 38103 or 38138 zip.

I think Memphis should wear these in real games, Atleast in big games they play.

Thoughts?

I think they are awful. Just put our damn logo on the helmets

Goofy ****. Nobody gives s damn about an area code

I agree with you 100%!

Their is a M logo on the right side of the helmet. So everybody should be happy.
