Baseball Preview: Diamond Hawks Return To CAA Play With Tribe
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – The Seahawks return to conference play this weekend when they begin a three-game series on Friday with a 6 p.m. start against visiting William & Mary.
UNCW (22-8) owns a 5-1 mark in Colonial Athletic Association play while the Tribe (14-15) carries a 6-3 mark into the weekend series.
The Seahawks, who have won their last four games, edged NC Central earlier this week, 3-2, for their third straight one-run victory and improved to 6-2 in those games. UNCW trailed 2-0 in the eighth inning when it rallied with three runs, the final two coming in on a two-out double by Kennard McDowell. Jordan Ramsey pitched out of a bases-loaded spot in the eighth and slammed the door in the ninth as he struck out the side for his seventh save.
W&M fell to Longwood, 7-4, to dip below the .500 mark for the season. Longwood built a 7-2 lead after seven innings before the Tribe scored twice in the eighth to round out the scoring. Freshman Cullen Large headed the Tribe lineup with four hits in the leadoff spot while Charley Gould had two hits and knocked in three runs. Gould homered three times in the series finale at Towson last weekend.
The Seahawks will send Nick Monroe to the bump in game one on Friday followed by Ryan Foster on Saturday. In the series finale, Josh Roberson will make his second start of the season following a strong outing in relief last weekend against UNC Asheville.
The Tribe will answer with Jason Ingrham, Nick Brown and Aaron Fernandez.
UNCW will hold a "Be the Match" event prior and during the game where people can get registered with the national bone marrow registry. Saturday's game will be a 2 p.m. start.
