The Zone tonight: talking UA BOT
Supposed to talk about whether the UA BOT is too involved in athletics.

RE: The Zone tonight: talking UA BOT
It's too late to ask Joab Thomas about BOT firing him (and AD Steve Sloan) over their hire of Bill Curry by Bama. The very first thing "Hootie" Ingram reportedly did when hired to replace Sloan was to inform Curry that his new contract would have a sharply reduced buy out clause even though Bama was 9-2 that year. Curry considered that to be "hand writing on the wall" and took the job at UKY that winter. The role of the BOT with UAB is just an extension of what they have always done. The names change but not the power structure.

No one unless interested in the topic of BOT activities in UA system athletics - including UAB. As I stated, the BOT names change but not the system that provides them absolute autocratic power.

Why doesn't Paul "Daddy Cheated like a SOB" Bryant Jr get the same treatment the media gave Bobby Lowder?

Surprised Avery Johnson didn't take an FN selfie with Karen Brooks.

Good stuff on the Zone tonight. Don't know how much more UAB talk there will be, but there was quite a bit of UAB/UA/BOT talk in that first segment.

I hope it doesn't. I don't have any issues with UA Athletics. My issues lie with the BOT and our current leadership. We need good publicity for college basketball in this state.

We have good publicity for the only college basketball school that matters to me.

No we don't.

Hope the guys on southside aren't as short sighted as you are.

If you expect UAB coverage to increase as a result of Alabama and/or Auburn getting better don't hold your breath.

Our success isn't based off of how some other school in the state does.

RE: The Zone tonight: talking UA BOT
Having several good schools in the state increases basketball coverage for all. When UAB is good and the others suck, coverage is about spring football. When all three schools are thriving in basketball, basketball is covered. When there is a buzz about basketball, fans get excited about basketball, and while they won't drive to Tuscaloosa or Auburn to a game, they will go to one locally.

The most excited I have ever seen Birmingham about basketball was when all three schools were doing good in the mid and late 1980's.

That's exactly how I feel.

I've soured on Alabama because of some of those rabid fans and the culture that the board have manufactured, but I'm far from writing off the whole school. Alabama and Auburn doing well won't help UAB at all, but, if they turn the corner again, the coverage creates a dynamic that bodes well for UAB, too.

Imagine how crazy it'd be if top teams in the state had a series while ranked? If they met in the NCAA tournament? That's the kind of stuff that can become the vehicle for interest state wide and create the kind of crossover fans that are important for a university.
