I'm tired of WMU grads not supporting the school
This guy is a WMU grad, who posted this photo on twitter.

I haven't talked to this guy in forever, and from what I remember of him, I like him. But I CANNOT STAND WMU grads who homer for schools they never attended. And here is another example. Boasting about how he's literally kicking back at the office, watching the Masters, with a GIANT ND flag behind the monitor.

Why? Why in the fork? Seriously. The school you graduated from who gave you an opportunity to follow the career you obviously enjoy as you're still doing it 10 years after graduation. But yet you choose to be a fan of a school you have absolutely no connection to other than you were a fan growing up?

Unfortunate, very unfortunate. And I'm putting that mildly.

I was going to say at least he got the sock and shoe colors right.

That's the unfortunate reality of P5 schools basically acting (and marketing) as semi-pro leagues.

If I had a nickel for every person I see on campus sporting the paraphernalia of a different school...

... and he's at the office...getting a lot of work done.

I think it's OK for someone to cheer for another school. For example, who did you want to win the national championship in b-ball. Most people took a side.

However, I would never abandon Western or substitute another school for the Broncos. I loved my time at Boston College, enjoyed Boston University. had a great experience at Northeastern, but, darn, WMU is my school that gave me the foundation for my future. I was a mess when I first attended Western...my wife would argue that I still am...but after graduating got free rides to all the other schools. Western prepared me. The Broncos are my school...period.

Holy cow! That was a lot of blunder...sorry guys.

I shouldn't be so harsh. I just get frustrated sometimes. We have a successful school and successful grads, we should celebrate that, instead of our childhood allegiances.

RE: I'm tired of WMU grads not supporting the school
I was a diehard scUM fan growing up. I worked weekends when I went to Western, so to watch the UM games I took out a loan and bought a new fangled gadget at The Sound Room, a VCR. Price at the time $700.

I was still a Michigan fan even in the 80's and 90's. Then I attended 3 WMU bball games against UM. I was torn. After every game I heard the UM fans making excuses or belittling WMU. By that third game I had had it. When the UM clown next to me started making excuses I said, "Western has owned UM lately, maybe theyre just better." I've hated them ever since, but it got reinforced when I spent two years team teaching with a UM grad. She was worthless, but she routinely reminded you of her pedigree.

I lived outside of Elkhart with my brother in law while our house was built. The Walmart WOLVE crowd has nothing on the Walmart ND fans.

RE: I'm tired of WMU grads not supporting the school
I had nothing against UM until I moved to metro Detroit in 1978 and got a heady dose of the 'Attitude'. Several young engineers at Chrysler where I worked were UM grads and they oozed arrogance.

Not content with enjoying the athletic success of UM teams, they felt compelled to continually belittle every other school, including WMU. Their behavior was not only boorish, it was pathological. They needed to continually belittle everyone else in order to feel big.

One day I just had enough and started actively supporting the school I'd attended and grown to love. And-I have to admit-enjoying seeing UM teams lose. Beating scum in the CCHA tourney a couple years back made my day! Muck Fish again!

RE: I'm tired of WMU grads not supporting the school
There isn't a problem with supporting another school. But you need to support YOUR SCHOOL first. And no making excuses ---- 'They're not in the Big 10' 'They're not very good' 'MSU was in the Ro$e Bowl last year' 'UofM has the Big House and Harbaugh'.

It's also fully possible he has a WMU flag on the other wall. As a student I was in many dorms/apartments where students would have 2 flags: one for a P5 school and one for WMU.
Just like that there's many people who have a WMU shirt to go along with their P5 shirt.

Don't get me wrong. I WISH they'd support WMU ONLY. And in all sports. None of this 'I support Duke and MSU in basketball, and Alabama and Michigan in football'. Those fans are even worse. But alas.

I agree that you should be allowed to have a flag, logo, coffee mug -- whatever of any (non-anti-WMU) school around. But to have that as your own insignia is a slap in the face.

It'd be like living with a girlfriend, but in your office, you only have pictures of a famous actress up on the walls; nothing of her on your computer background, framed-picture on desk or wall -- nothing. Just posters and computer background of actress "Tammy Salami" all around.

"What, honey? This is my man cave! My office!"

And don't think this is a WMU or state of Michigan problem, I saw a car with a Loyola Marymount Alumni license plate frame and a black and gold P in the rear window.

What do you expect? Half of the students in the process of attending the school don't support their athletic programs. No reason to think that's going to change after they are gone.

That doesn't necessarily mean anything. One spouse could've graduated from Loyola, the other Purdue.

Or maybe a child went to one, parents the other.

The main thing that gets most people going to be a fan of their school isn't on-campus. The average Joe & Jane -- and just about everyone else -- isn't going to be affected by flare and such on-campus promoting the teams, etc. Someone going from not really being a sports fan of the college To being a sports fan of the college -- that's about the only on-campus shift you'll see. Ads, imagry, etc by itself won't.

What Does shift it is stuff Outside campus. Average Joe & Jane who follow sports a bit seeing their team on TV. Talked about on the news. Playing a regional big-name team and making it close and/or winning once in a while, gaining respect. That's what shifts Many.

RE: I'm tired of WMU grads not supporting the school
The Greek system at WMU needs to get more engaged. Was a time when, if you were a member of a Fraternity or Sorority, you were EXPECTED to be at the majority of games-wearing your unique colors and garb. Sections are allocated in the stands to individual groups/clubs and the expectation was you would be there. Their presence formed a nucleus for students as a whole and going to a big game became THE event on campus.

Has Fleck challenged the Greeks and WMU clubs to respond in this manner? Just going after individual students has diminishing returns, IMO.
