The UC Bearcats and Butler Bulldogs will begin a home-and-home series next season, with the first game being played at Fifth Third Arena, according to a report by CBSSports.com's Jon Rothstein.

The second game in the series would be played at Hinkle Fieldhouse during the 2016-17 season, according to the report.

Both schools were 23-11 this past season and lost (UC to Kentucky, Butler to Notre Dame) in the NCAA tournament Round of 32.

The Bearcats' crosstown rival, Xavier, downed Butler in the Big East tournament quarterfinals. XU split with the Bulldogs during the regular season, falling at Butler in January before exacting revenge in February.

Mick Cronin has never faced Butler. The Bearcats lead the all-time series with Butler, 10-6. In Cincinnati, UC leads 7-0. In Indianapolis, Butler leads 6-2. At a neutral site; UC is 1-0.

UC has won the past three meetings between the teams - in 1997, 1993 and 1973.

Hinkle is one of the all-time great places to play basketball, and Butler is a quality opponent. This is great news.

I second both opinions.

Spent many hours watching and playing basketball in Hinkle.

Back then it was Butler Fieldhouse, and Frank "Pop" Hedden who was an assistant of Tony Hinkle, was the father of a grade school friend.

Love it...wouldn't mind this becoming a more permanent fixture on the schedule, but you've got to start somewhere.

Wasn't the Butler Fieldhouse the arena used for the final game in the movie Hoosiers?

It was. I actually got a chance to go into Hinkle Monday evening before I went to the NCAA Championship game. I can't wait until a game up there. They still have the original floor installed from the 1920s!

It will be a fun road trip for Bearcat fans and a historic place for the team to play.
Mick will have to show them Hoosiers before the game in case they haven't seen it.

I know the scorer's table and water fountains will not have to be afraid when the Bearcats play there.

Butler Fieldhouse was the home of the Indiana high school championships, back when there was only one division and no downtown arenas.

Don't know when they stopped playing there.

I echo Ash's words. I saw a Butler game in Hinkle. I loved the arena. So many great players, from the state of Indiana, have played there. Easy trip from Cincy and good time.

Hinkle is awesome. it is where Milan actually won the State Title in 1954. The year after I graduated, my HS won the Regional in Columbus, IN and got to play in the Sweet 16 at Hinkle. Lost to the eventual state champs, but it was still a cool experience. Great to see this series start up.

News story about that 1992 team...

I have been to many games at Hinkle. It is a great OLD building.

Let me use some of the same phrases to describe Hinkle as I have heard about the Shoe.

Very poor sight lines...

Concourses are non-existent...

Concession stand lines block what little concourse there is...

If you need to use the restroom, I wouldn't wait until halftime or you will miss the start of the second half...

Parking is very limited near the arena...

It is an historic OLD building but it is not a very good place to watch a game.

That movie would've been way more boring if it followed the game more closely...

"Milan 32, Muncie Central 30

Tied 26–26 in a defensive battle with heavily favored perennial power Muncie Central after three quarters, Plump, who had uncharacteristically shot only 2-for-10 from the field at that point, froze the ball unchallenged for over four minutes during the fourth quarter. Tied at 30, Plump hit a 14-footer from the right side as time expired to seal the win in a low-scoring defensive battle, denying the Bearcats a fifth state title."

Could you imagine four minutes of movie reel time with Jimmy Chitwood just standing there...

career high school point totals to future Bearcats.
