This is the information I was told last night from NAU's athletic department - that this was a chain reaction from UAB's dropping football.

NO - San Diego only went to the playoffs because 1) the Pioneer League champ was ineligible, and 2) Pioneer League gets an auto-bid.

Pioneer League is non-schollie. They are really DIII teams that have to play in DI because all their other sports are in DI

USD tied for first in the Pioneer League last year. They have one of the best non-scholarship FCS teams. They were beaten easily by Cal Poly and Montana last year, so they're not as good as teams in the top half of the Big Sky, but they're probably as good as mediocre-to-bad FCS scholarship teams.

Still, the reason to not play USD, no matter how good their team, is that a win over USD won't be a countable win for SDSU toward bowl eligibility. Maybe FCS scholarship teams wanted a lot more money to play at SDSU that week, and the SDSU AD didn't want to pay it?

Also, from what the SDSU AD said, they could have filled that spot with a home/home starting this year against another G5 team, but it didn't happen because both teams wanted the home game in 2015.
