Central Arkansas officials apply to host NCAA bowl game

Associated Press
5:03 p.m. EDT, April 1, 2015

LiTTLE ROCK, Ark.— A group of government, civic and business officials in Central Arkansas submitted an application Wednesday, April 1, to the NCAA for a college football bowl game to be played at War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock.

If approved by the NCAA, the group plans to hold the first game in December between teams from the Sun Belt Conference and the American Athletic Conference. If the NCAA approves the plan, a coordinating committee will announce the bowl's name, title sponsor and television partner later.

"We think a college bowl game will be the perfect addition to the event schedule at War Memorial," said Kevin Crass of Little Rock, the chairman of the War Memorial Stadium Commission. "The game will showcase the attractions that central Arkansas has to offer for a national television audience while introducing a new group of visitors to the area's many amenities.

The Sun Belt members with football teams are Arkansas State, Georgia Southern, Appalachian St, Louisiana-Lafayette, Texas State, South Alabama, Louisiana-Monroe, Troy, New Mexico State, Idaho and Georgia State.

The American Athletic Conference's football teams are Central Florida, Cincinnati, Connecticut, East Carolina, Houston, Memphis, the U.S. Naval Academy, South Florida, SMU, Temple, Tulane and Tulsa.

The group hopes for a decision from the NCAA in May.

The stadium, with a current seating capacity of 54,120, was built in 1947-48, has long served as a second home site for the Arkansas Razorbacks and occasionally has been the site for Arkansas State games.

RE: Arkansas officials submit application to NCAA for Little Rock Bowl
The AAC has been running down the Little Rock Bowl on their board. The ECU posters have really been running down the Little Rock bowl. It's a real shame that this bowl was offered to this arrogant bunch. It would be so much better if the MAC or MWC would have been offered the opposite slot.

It's ok, they will go again, play a sunbelt team again... And lose again.

ECU doesn't count. They spent decades wanting to be in Big East and joined the old CUSA instead.

Remember ECU is the school that long advocated expanding CUSA to 16 so they wouldn't have to play the Texas games their fans didn't care about.

The Little Rock Bowl helps AAC deal with the lack of bowls close to the western members. The ECU fans don't give a crap if none of the bowls are appropriate for the western members.

They mention that the Bowl game would be in December but they don't say what year the game will start.

That would be 5 bowl tie-ins for the SBC

New Orleans bowl va CUSA or MWC
GoDaddy bowl. vs MAC
Camellia bowl. vs MAC
AutoNation Cure bowl. vs AAC
Little Rock bowl vs AAC

Meh. I'm burned out watching Sun Belt-MAC bowl games. I like that this bowl and the Orlando bowl are AAC matchups.

Mais, me too. You sure you ain't Cajun 04-rock That will put the SBC playing 3 of the other 4 G5 conferences. Now we need a bowl out west versus the MWC for TXST, NMSU, and Idaho along with the rest of the SBC to give them a bowl within driving distance and to give our conference some exposure out West for recruiting

The Cajuns were fortunate to play teams from both CUSA (East Carolina, Tulane) and the MWC (San Diego St, Nevada-Reno)

Its a bowl for the western teams. The eastern AAC fans are posting the vast majority of the negative comments. The eastern AAC fans will likely never see their teams assigned to that bowl. My feeling is I would much rather drive 500 miles to a bowl against a mid-pack G5 team than drive (or fly) 1000+ miles to a bowl against a mid-pack G5 team. Im pretty sure the vast majority of fans feel the same way.

I never been to War Memorial stadium, at least it has a current seating capacity of 54,120, even though it is old.

I know the AAC thinks they are so much superior to the SBC but they should be glad to have another bowl tie-in and at a stadium that seats more than 30,000 no matter who or where they play

Little Rock is in driving distance for alot of their schools. It might not have as much to do as a city like Orlando, but it is much better than Boise.

It's just a few people, most don't care much one way or the other, and most west schools and fans are for it. Ecu fans don't want to go there for a minor bowl, and to be honest it's unlikely they ever would. It will be a landing spot for one of the bottom wrung west bowl schools.
