With the new conference title game rules in effect for 2016, conference realignment for the last 20 years was a waste of time.

2 decades of posturing for absolutely nothing! The only good thing that came of it was that we are no longer independent.

IF UAB football doesn't come back this impacts whether or not C-USA should expand. It also opens up more eastern options since balanced divisions wouldn't be necessary.

Folks dont realize just how big a deal this is. This development is HUGE. Totally changes the idea of conference structure. I'm not going to lie...from what I'm hearing, the chatter has already begun.

A lot of people think this ends the idea of allignment......truth is, this is a new beggining. Totally new strategy from here out. Dont be surprised if we see something radical come from this. Conference splits and schools looking to allign more geographically.

To echo the sentiments of my well informed friend here. This could spell the demise of Conference USA as we know it. An already geographically divided West and East could both pick up a group of schools and split with out any fear of losing what advantage they had of staying together.

Wouldn't the college football payout to CUSA prevent that from happening? Who would get that payout if there was a split? If there was a loose alignment of (16) teams that play a championship game, split the playoff money, and get two NCAA basketball bids that might be sense, but I don't see how a complete separation would work.

I would think the money would be split if the split was amicable. It isn't important how big the payout is over all as much as how much per school. You can have separate conferences with an agreement to play each other for scheduling convenience. That's sorta what Big8 and SWC did for years and years. Adding a Co-conference Championship game would probably be met with some fanfare as it would be an opportunity to pit two top G5 Conference Champs against each other prior to the Access Bowl selection. I am just thinking outside the box here as we are totally in uncharted territory.
