Seems like a solid hire. I hope they teach him the ropes and then we can hire him in a year or two.05-stirthepot

Coaching under doesn't mean success. In this case I hope it does.

As a fan of Angelo's conference mate Tarleton , good I am glad he is gone. He gave us fits this year.

I am impressed that UALR's new AD made this hire for seemingly the right reasons rather than listening to the local media who know nothing about their needs or potential.

The always reliable Wikipedia has his overall head coaching record at 119-36.

Wally Hall (local sports editor) is already bashing the hiring on Twitter since we didn't hire one of his buddies (Darrell Walker or Joe Kleine). He did the same thing many years ago when we didn't hire one of his buddies (also an ex-hog).

RE: UALR Hires Chris Beard as Men's Basketball Coach
Wally stated on the radio today that the UALR was the only non-football school in the SBC and that if this coach doesn't succeed they may be headed for D2 or D3.

Apparently, a coach that has never coached college basketball and a guy that has been on staff during UALR's struggles over the last 6 seasons were CLEARLY better choices because... you know...

In terms of basketball coaches...yes. In terms of instate perception, no. UALR gains no perception of this instate, because the way Arkansas works is that no one has ever heard of you unless you used to play for the Razorbacks, or are from the state of Arkansas.

The sad truth is no one has ever heard of Chris Beard over here, and won't give two licks that he coached under Knight.

Its backwardswville USA over here. One of the main local writers actually claimed that he thinks this is proof UALR is likely headed to D2 themselves.

If you dont live in Arkansas, You'll never understand it. Local people here could name off the football members of the SBC, or most of them, because they appear on AState's Schedule every year, and we've got a decent amount of publicity since we separated ourselves from the rest of the state a few years ago.

UALR for years has accepted life in the shadows of the University of Arkansas. They did what the Razorbacks wanted...had coaches call the hogs at local functions (Steve Shields this year) and even hired former Raozrbacks to run their programs, all hoping to bring in Razorback fans to their games. Ultimately what that has done, is isolate UALR to the point that no one notices them. Almost every pro Razorback move they made was a flop, and it's led to a program that has dropped like a rock since the 1980's...

This is the first time I ever remember UALR taking steps to separate itself from the Razorbacks. If you want to be successful in Arkansas, you have to separate yourself from Arkansas as your own school.

RE: UALR Hires Chris Beard as Men's Basketball Coach
Only ASU fans can compliment you and slap you in the face at the same time. We fought that battle against UAf long before you did when we were under Newell. However it is true that we've sadly dropped that attitude especially lately. This is a fresh start that I'm excited about. One thing I will say is that UALR has been a far more prominent basketball program than ASU since the 80's. We've just plain been better at basketball.

What we need to do is what you're saying, though. We need to carve out our own niche and build lifelong fans and not scooping up Hog droppings hoping they'll stick around when we suck.

I wasn't arguing that, I was arguing perception. Without football, you guys are behind us in that area.

I'm a big fan of the passive-aggressive style of posting.

I remember the time when everyone dropped by our board to talk mid major basketball. Years of crap product and fans supporting friends led to this passive-aggressive style of posting.

Except for Bob who is full on aggressive, LOL.

Lets hope this works out as we need to get 3 solid mid major program programs rolling in the belt.

Right now, we have nothing but the 2 UL schools run helped be to believe in Belt ball a little more.
