Memphis presented to Outsiders
Was pretty interesting.. I had friends in from the Midwest this weekend. I showed em around a little. Sun Studio. Graceland (during the light of day). Beale. Lorraine Motel--which was particularly interesting as it was April 4th. Wowzers the COGIC contingent was out in force. Unfortunately, no hats, however...

So I was just telling stories about Memphis and just funny little tidbits. I mentioned mongo but to no real avail as words do not do that justice. I told of Myron Lowry's fist bump and "Hello Dhali" incident; to which she responded, "the MAYOR?" haha. yeah. yeah the interim mayor... but yes... ugh.

I mentioned to Shake off the Haters slogan...
The drunken city council.

And she experienced something I missed... the sign on the expressway says, regarding texting and driving, "Oh CELL NO!"
ha.

But anyway we talked and laughed and I told as many little stories about Dr Nick and Elvis (and how all the local physicians stopped answering their phones when nick was out of town) and all kinds of anecdotal type stuff she'd never hear elsewhere.

So I thought maybe a good thread idea---what are some things you'd tell visitors? Funny/Interesting stuff that would never make the visitor pamphlets?

Go.
04-cheers

RE: Memphis presented to Outsiders
My niece and her bf came to town to visit. Stayed WED and THU in Tunica (they just turned 21)...FRI we did Cooper-Young (Central BBQ)...SAT we did the Zoo and Overton Square (BBQ Shop)...SUN we did Beale St, Peabody lobby/rooftop, drove past Sun and Stax.

They loved their trip, and said they would have to come back to visit Graceland and the Civil Rights Museum.

Religion and politics aren't discussed in polite company, so that never came up.

I did mention the Dalai Lama fist bump, and Ozzy being arrested here...

and retold a few of my moms old stories from Lafayette's (she was a server) about Billy Joel getting in line at his own concert...and KISS being ******** to the staff.

"Oh Cell No" is part of a TDOT campaign where TN residents voted on slogans and has little to do with memphis - you'd see the same slogans in Nashville and in/near other TN cities and highways.

The years Prince Mongo lived in our attic apartment and many of his shenanigans. The real history of the Hunt-Phelan Home. The interesting history of Earnestine and Hazel's and its connection to Club Paradise and Memphis music. The time my Daddy represented Ginger Alden and also Mary Jenkins, Elvis' cook. The time I saw Elvis checking out a motorcyle he wanted to buy on Bellevue with Linda riding on the back.

Have gun, will travel.

J/k. Usually tell people to check out all of the touristy spots, but to avoid eating at the touristy spots unless they wanna say they went. Usually I'll always tell folks to drive around Central Gardens if they want to get an idea of the urban neighborhood context that Midtown has. Always refer folks to South Main or Overton Square.
