Because clearly Duke was racist.

I just don't think Rose fit Duke. It had nothing to do with his race. I think Coach K tries to go after guys that he doesn't have to worry about once they leave practice for the day or during the summer. It's a about attitude and character and fitting into a team. And generally these dudes come from suburbia.

As to makeup of Duke students, my years there it was NJ/NYC and Florida that were the two largest draws. But contrary to the belief of some locals, NC was 5th...so, they actually do accept kids from the state. Regardless, if you go to Chapel Hill or NC State and then go to Duke, you will notice a difference in the student body.

This is exactly what Rose was talking about. According to him, there was nothing to worry about from the Fab five because they had no indication that they were gangsters, thugs, or inner city trouble kids but yet they weren't recruited by Duke.

That doesn't make Duke racist as someone else sarcastically suggested but it created a perception to these kids that they weren't good enough to be part of Duke.

The perception is reality to a lot of people.

It's not about being a gang member or thug...they just didn't fit into the type of atmosphere that is Duke. For one thing, Duke is about the team and not the individual...and, that seems like something Coach K has always prided himself on. Also, Duke had an unspoken policy that players stayed until their junior year. For many years, Coach K would bypass any player that might leave earlier than that.

Every team has a philosophy that they use in recruiting players. The same goes for the pros. Talent sometimes is not the only measure of evaluation.

Jalen should feel proud that he went to Michigan. That is an awesome institution with great people. He wanted a basketball scholarship and UM was one of many schools that offered him. He could have applied to Duke, if the education was what he was looking for.

I still disagree with you on this. Just because a group of talented kids don't play zone or a half court offense doesn't mean that they aren't a team.

This is exactly the conflict that played out at UTEP when Barbee was coach. UTEP had a tradition rooted in defense and half court offense. Barbee's style was run and gun.

At the end of the day, it's just two different styles of basketball. The problem however is that many associate it with something more than that. I think that is what Rose is talking about and what many UTEP fans say when they say Floyd is doing it the "right way".

what are you talking about? a basketball team is 5 or more players, playing together as a group. the philosophy of what makes a good team varies from team to team.

In contrast, there is absolutely no scenario where Duke winning is beneficial in any way to anything that I care about.

It has nothing to do with privilege of Duke (as I'm perfectly cool with schools like Stanford, Northwestern and Vandy). See Notre Dame and Michigan fans try to one-up each other in arguing that they are supposedly so much more clean than their rivals at USC and Ohio State despite having tons of their own dirty laundry.

I know enough about sports that it's complete B.S... and Duke is the absolute WORST offender. I'll take schools like Kentucky, UNC or Ohio State that unabashedly do everything possible to win and doesn't pretend that they don't have any dirt on them any day over the sanctimonious crap we hear from Duke (just as the New York Yankees and their upfront monolithic spending offend me much less than the disingenuous Cardinals). Duke is the worst and it's not even close.

(P.S. I know that there are a bunch of ECU fans on the board, so I understand that many of them may hate UNC more compared to Duke. However, I just see that as a fairly typical in-state dispute between the flagship and the other public universities. Duke is "special" in that the hatred for them is transcendent and national. UNC is "just" a power basketball program from a national perspective and little more than that. In contrast, Duke is a proxy for all things pompous and arrogant in sports.)

I get the feeling you probably hate the Patriots too.

Everyone hates the Patriots!! Even the Patriots fans. Probably because they're bandwagoners, and everyone knows it.

Yep, that's what those Michigan players said in that ESPN 30 for 30. Rose mentioned how he disliked Laettner for that reason and even disliked Grant Hill because he "had good parents", etc. Clearly racists (at least concerning Laettner) comments that were overlooked.

I have no love for Duke but respect the school. Anyway, being from NC it's widely known that most Duke students come from up North. There' a reason the school is called "The University of New Jersey - Durham".

Which 30 for 30 was that? I seem to recall the Jalen Rose comments came from the Fab Five one, and not the Laettner one.

I think you are right. Those two intertwined obviously so I probably just got them mixed up. Thanks for the clarification.

I remember this. If I recall, Jalen Rose was talking about how he was a very good student and had the grades to go to Duke but was never recruited by them.

awwwwwwwwwwwww....jalen rose is another espenis product....his objectivity mirrors yours and the cuntry....

just another pathetic narcissistic ploy as it creates distension amongst the masses that think their shite matters....

I promise....'we' don't give a fk about the diptards....line 1, 3 and 4...check 'em out...

awwww....does that hurt feelings?

UNC has always presented themselves as "holier than thou" so in that regard you are way off. It is referred to as the "Carolina Way" and they have flaunted it for a couple of centuries. I don't hate UNC, heck my Mother went to grad school there. But they certainly do pretend that they have no dirt on them. The recent revelations have severely tarnished the image and made it difficult for them to realistically promote themselves as a program that plays by the rules and wins.

While right on many subjects, you are incorrect about ECU fans and their view of UNC. Everything you wrote about Duke is UNC. Carolina may not have the power of Texas, but in may ways the ACC feels the pressure of "the right way Carolina".

Ask a South Carolina fan why they left the ACC.

Ask a Clemson fan on how they felt after winning a national championship in football, being place on probation, and how they felt about the additional penalties placed by the ACC.

There is a reason many cheer A.B.C. (anybody but Carolina).

RE: Do you hate Duke?
I have been a Duke fan since I was a kid. (along with ACC). In the 80's there was a duke navy game in the tournament (Navy had David Robinson) in which the commentators stated that it was probably the only game where all the players could actually spell their major.

I am not excited about coach K and the one and done (sorta pops the illusion), but he has to do what he needs to do to survive.

I have know several Duke graduates, and they were all down to earth (true it is a limited sample). While also a UVA fan - I know a much larger sample of their graduates and many of them are jerks.

FYI - I went to a division 3 collage that did not have a football team at the time.

4. Chistian Laettner. Nuff said.

5. Dick Vitale... Oh Dook, the Dookies. F off!

6. They pay the refs.

7. Shane Battier... wtf is wrong with his head. Another mutant.

What exactly does "look like they are gay" look like to you, and why do you care?

That is the reason why I went to Duke. I was accepted into 3 Ivy League schools and I choose Duke because most people didn't throw their wealth around and were very nice. We lacked the truly crazy far left types that you find at the ivy schools. And, everyone was big on sports. I am not an expert, but of the UVA alums I know, about half are very nice people and the other half could turn coal into diamonds.
