With 0 open scholarships could they shift the Serb to an academic scholarship? Not sure how the rules work on stuff like this.

RE: 2015 JMU MBB Roster
To take this guy on, someone has to leave the program, obviously.

He's looking at Towson, JMU and Northern Kentucky.

He was a Blaine Taylor recruit at ODU, but switched to the last minute to Niagara.

Niagara has lost something like 5 players to transfer in the off-season.

Snowden is from the Tidewater area.

Someone clarify the transfer rule for me. When a kid moves from a division 1 program to another division 1 program, when does his scholarship count against the maximum?

I know they sit out a year, but not sure if the scholarship count works on a semester basis or on a calendar basis.

RE: 2015 JMU MBB Roster
I think they would need to be under scholarship once they transferred but I've heard of a couple of cases where guys shift to academic scholarships- would think Dimitri has the academic chops for that. Snowden I think got hung up with the coaching change at ODU and admissions didn't accept him so he had to go to Niagra- by all accounts seems like he would be a good contributor. Also Justin Leon a PF Juco recruit who JMU had offered in the Spring decommited from La Tech after their coaching change so he may be in play. As for Snowden seems like a burned bridge at ODU so they would be out- FWIW both Towson and Northern Kentucky appear to be at their scholarship limit as well. Towson has two commits over the last week- which took place after the story of them being interested in Snowden appeared.

Also pure speculation but could Roland reclassify or go post grad - Wichita State did that with a kid they beat JMU for last year- he played at a post grad school and then because a scholarship athlete the following year.

On a related note Ryan Johnson from Rutgers announced he is transferring. You may recall that JMU lost out to Rutgers for Johnson last year. He red shirted at Rutgers so I think he would be eligible right away as a freshman. 6-6 SF from NC. It would be a good problem to have for the staff to have to decide between Snowden (older more developed/well rounded game has to it out a year 2 years of eligibility) and Johnson (younger, can play right away has 4 years of eligibility) if both are truly interested in being Dukes.

Don't you lose one year of eligibility?

I'm almost positive that due to Johnson burning his red shirt, and then transferring, they take one of the 5 years leaving him with three. What saved Cook and some of the others who left us is they were never red shirted. So they where able to not lose a playing year. Therefore we are comparing a 2 year player versus a 3 year player.

Sometimes transfers work. We have several examples like AJ and Bowles. But, I think it's always the primary move to find kids out of HS to develop over 4 years. Brady has to be keenly aware of APR also so he can't necessarily take any transfer he can get regardless of their talent.

I think you may be right- not sure if in this young man's case if the fact that he was a partial qualifier and had to red shirt because of that plays into it or not. A player who red shirted for JMU a few years back went Juco and I think he maintained his 4 years of eligibility so that could be a route Johnson takes or he may be able to play immediately next year as a sophomore. I'm not quite sure.

A couple of news items recently on this years Dukes. Kevin Roland will play under the name Kevin Kangni and he was cleared by the NCAAs and will join JMU in the next week for Summer session. Also the CAA coaches had their annual meeting last week and the consensus seems to be that Hofstra will be pre season #1 and JMU #2. Brady seems upbeat about the off season work that players are putting in so far.
