RE: O/T: Why it's almost impossible to build a mid-major dynasty
P.S. Bob, are you in favor of EMU paying a coach e.g., Smart 1.5 - 1.8M or Marshall more than 1.8M?

We are talking universities 'blowing their budget' on a basketball coach.

http://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports/.../70861402/

"Terms of the agreement, which was reached late Wednesday, were not disclosed because the final contract still must be signed. It is expected to be a significant raise from the base salary of $1.85 million that Marshall was making on his previous seven-year rollover contract.

Marshall has led the Shockers to four straight NCAA tournaments, including a trip to the Final Four in 2013."

As Sam might have mentioned, Gonzaga, VCU, Wichita State, etc. do not have collegiate FB. They pour all of their $ into basketball.

Jacobson is getting $900,000/year for 10 years. EMU cannot afford an expensive coach because they don't produce enough revenue. If Marshall, Smart, and Jacobson were 'just' winning but not drawing fans, their schools would not be in position to keep them. It really is incumbent upon the mid-major coach to 1. win big and 2. create buzz and draw fans.

You keep saying this and it simply isn't true. A coach's job is to coach, recruit, and win. The school has a marketing department specifically to create a buzz of the program. Stop blaming Murphy for the lack of fan turnout.

You are incorrect. At the major conference level, that is true. You don't have to market because the fanbase is there--especially if you win. At the MID-MAJOR level, it is absolutely, 100% the case. There is no attendance difference between the Boone-Ramsey-Murphy years.

Sam,

You are absolutely correct. Murphy and the fellas need to win games. That will create a buzz in and of itself that EMU's marketing department can build on.

That has already been disproven. Rob, you have a tenuous grasp of how athletics work. I can tell you are a casual fan. Murphy has won way more than Jim Boone did, yet the attendance figures are virtually the same, if not worse.

Ah yes, I forget, you are the all seeing and all knowing guru. Thank you for reminding me!

Got it: EMU basketball has poor attendence because Rob Murphy hasn't kissed enough babies.

God, that's tiresome. Just stick to slow motion women's basketball, that awful game seems to be more your style.
