Wow, things have really changed for the better. I lived not far from downtown one year (a group of us found a huge cheap house) and we never had a desire to go downtown except to bar hop the few places that had beer specials or a good band playing.

If JMU really pushed to expand grad / doctorate programs I think those type of students would really benefit and contribute to a cool downtown vibe in Harrisonburg. Studio apartments over retail shops, that kind of thing. Younger kids are all about what's going on around campus but a larger grad population would add to the town's character and culture.

it's already happened/happening 04-cheers

Downtown Harrisonburg is quite abuzz with with upperclassmen, graduate students, and a good mix of locals too! Definitely good things going on most nights of the week.

More JMU traffic downtown than ever, no doubt.

Downtown has numerous really good restaurants and bars.

Campus is creeping downtown.

I don't now of this could or would ever happen...that forgotten little street that Monger Lumber sits on, if Monger would sell the land, that would be the first direct link between campus and the middle of downtown.

When I was there 20 years ago there was nothing downtown. The bank, one bar (that closed in '95), and a party store where everyone would go to buy their Halloween costumes. That was it!

Downtown is fantastic now. I'm hopeful that it leads to some more change within the city.

New BBQ resturant going in where Pennybackers used to be. Social BBQ, They will have sandwiches and plate dinners. Beer, mixed drinks inside and a roof top beer garden. Opens Mid-April. Owners are locals and are very anxious to start a great new place.

I went to high school with the guy who owns the place. Great guy. You should see the smokers they're using for the meats...

Yes, Harrisonburg has come a looooong way, Downtown especially. Growing up, Downtown had the library, Jess', and the A&N store...that was about it. Now there's tons of bars, restaurants, and shops. They're aren't a ton of "loft" apartments, but there are a few. However, there are a bunch of premium apartment complexes and nice old renovated warehouses-turned-condos in the downtown area. The hardest choice will be deciding where to eat lunch on Saturday while I'm up there for Easter... So many great choices!
