McKay press conference made me wonder
Watched the press conference online yesterday. I've had a thought that has kept running through my mind. It keeps popping up. When York, Barber, Jr. and McKay entered, York welcomed everyone. Okay so far. Just before introducing Jr, he states that there will be no interaction at the press conference. No questions from the audience. Hmmmm.....well okay. Jr, briefly speaks, Barber speaks, then McKay speaks. McKay talks about family, his faith, Liberty, new facilities, growth of the school, and introduces family members. Okay.

I was waiting for the time to hear the rah-rah to get we fans excited. Other than one reference to having a PhD in defense, there was no other BB mention. I kept waiting to hear something, anything that I could grasp that would be a phrase or mention that would generate interest and build enthusiasm. Instead, there was a carefully crafted mention about how he could not control how others felt about his departure. The press conference ended more like a wake than a new HC hiring. No buzz, no excitement. At best it was bland.

Seems like the decision was made to not allow any fans to ask or question McKay, welcome him, ask about his LU past, or what he was hoping for the future. One can believe this was scripted to not to allow any comment by a fan that would be in the media afterwards. It just seemed to me contrived, planned and controlled. If this was Barber or Jr. decision, seems it would have wiser to let McKay address the questions as they came unfiltered. I think we got the homogenized version.

RE: McKay press conference made me wonder
if you ask him questions, I presume 7 of 10 would have been about his departure and why he left, hardly anything about his return. And more importantly and understandably so there would have been the ones asking if another coach friend asks you to leave again, how quick are you to depart. So by doing the no questions thing it only allows for him to be introduced and next time he speaks he will then say how he has been here for awhile and getting ready for the season and how his recruiting is blah blah blah.

I don't know if 7 of 10 questions would be on his departure but one could assume this would have been the most popular question. Once he settles in we can expect the upbeat new coach speak of what he sees for the direction of the program and how he sees us getting there. He does have a little more pressure on him this time but a goal much easier to achieve with a near bottom of the barrel RPI.

I think McKay has always had a laid back demeanor so I wouldn't read into that. I think many press conferences like this are "scripted" so I am not worried by no questions by the media. It's a controversial hire and they want to control the storyline. The players seem to really like him from the article Chris Lang wrote.

One can assume with the way that he departed from LU the powers that be at the school did not want to have any possibility of any negative comment being made. If that had happened, it likely would have been the headline rather than the importance of the hire.

RE: McKay press conference made me wonder
Guys, I spent over a quarter century attending news conferences as a member of the TV news media. And frankly, what you saw is pretty standard procedure for just about any school at the Division I level. It was certainly a soimilar situation here in Texas Shaka Smart was introduced. What you saw was not a news conference. It was an introduction to the community. There were plenty of questions in the media availability as eveidenced by the media coverage that followed.

There are certainly things that I would have counseled them to share in front of the crowd that didn't make it into the narrative. But the format was not an issue.

What McKay said and did not say, and what he omitted and overstated, are all fillers now in April as we wait until the basketball season begins. We'll monitor his recruits and judge them and McKay with pre-season hype and anticipation. When we finally play, we can expect a honeymoon from the fans and an increase in attendance and interest. Attendance should double and grow and return to levels when McKay coached years ago.

McKay was a good coach at LU. He was creative when Asheville had a 7'6" center who dominated the inside. At a game in Asheville that I attended, McKay had his point guard go right at the big man by dribbling toward him and then circle in and occupy the paint. I remember watching that game in Asheville and how it was a very creative action to occupy the big man and create scoring opportunities for LU. It took the big man out of his game. LU lost but the game plan was unique.

We can expect a return to 3,000, 4,000 and even 5,000 attendance with most any sort of success. It will take time and the success must be constant to keep fan interest and attendance high. I'll shift with accolades and optimism soon. Today, I'm keeping him under the microscope, like the tight run, scripted, feel good intro. All McKay has to do is win, and win some more. That's why he and others are paid the big bucks.
