Chafin on fringe of making Diamondback's opening day roster?
Worth watching for the next week. The Diamondbacks are a mess and they'll probably be spending a lot of this year sorting through players and seeing who can contribute and who can't. The result has been a fairly wide open race for the pitching staff. Well, Andrew Chafin dropped out of the running really early for the starting rotation, but he's been given the opportunity to make the club out of the bullpen. It seemed like a longshot at first, but slowly, his competitors have dropped away and it looks like it is down to him vs. Vidal Nuno for that last spot in the bullpen.

Both are lefties, so Chafin doesn't hold an advantage there, but I think Chafin does have the advantage of "let's see what this kid can do" outlook that the Dbacks should be taking this year. Nuno's a nice pitcher, but I don't see a great major league future in him unless he stops being so vulnerable to the long ball (gave up 25 HRs in 161 major league innings last year). Chafin could be a rather effective middle reliever, sort of a hard throwing Paul Assenmacher to draw an old school Indians comparison.

So keep an eye out of Andrew to see if he heads to Phoenix or Reno next week.

Don't think so.

* Emmunuel Burriss was in the Nats camp, but was demoted to AAA about a week ago after going 1 for 28 in spring training.

* Travis Shaw did hit a spring training homerun off the Yankees, but will start the year at the Red Sox' AAA team.

* I think Matt Guerrier might have retired. I can't find anything on him.

* Last I heard Chris Carpenter was offered a contract to go back to Japan and place for Yakult, but I don't see him on the roster page.

* Taylor Williams and David Lyon did get to play in spring training, but neither had any hope of making their respective clubs.
