He basically says there's so much WWE in the men's game that it's hard to watch from an entertainment standpoint.

It's much more entertaining than watching the women's game, which is akin to watching paint dry.

He has a right to his opinion but he is making a broad generalization.
There are a lot of games where teams shoot very well. They do need to change some of the rules and stop calling so many touch fouls.
I have watched some women's basketball and you see more bricks, missed layups and turnovers than you ever see at a men's game. I wouldn't exactly call it boring but it is played below the rim and at generally a slower pace.

The college men's game has gone to crap.

It's not one and done's and it's not the rule changes.

The problem is AAU ball. Rosters often fluctuate from tournament to tournament. Players will generally not play for an AAU coach who isn't green lighting guys to shoot and demanding passing and working in for a good shot because the players are all chasing stats to get the best possible college offer. Why be the leading scorer at 18 on a team that scores 58 a game when you can score 26 on a team that averages 78 points a game?

Players arrive on campus with worse fundamental skills than they did 10 or 20 years ago, finding a good passer, or good defensive technique or even good shooting form is hard.

I've not watched many complete college games the past few years because it is so frustrating to see a court filled with athletes with very poor skills.

Well, he coaches in a sport that only has 3-6 teams that have any hope what so ever to win a title. The talent drop off is so severe after the top 10-12 teams that the #25 ranked team has almost no shot of beating the #6 team. There just is a horrible lack of talent depth on the women's side.

He plays maybe 4 games a year where the other team is anywhere in the same stratosphere as his team from a talent perspective. It's would be like UK playing a schedule of half Belt schools and half D-II schools every year with one game against UAB, one against Wisconsin, and one against Louisville.

I tip my hat to him because he has gotten to where he gets 5 of the top 10 players every year. If you do that you are going to be successful because there are only 30 good players in the whole country.

The women usually have better developed basketball skills but they are not as athletic and even with the smaller ball I've seen some absolutely terrible shooting.

I was saying this earlier this week. No parody in women's basketball. There's only like a handful of teams that get all of the top players and they completely dominate everyone else. Not even close. Why the hell would anyone want to watch that? Uconn destroying teams by 40 every single year. Yeah the Kentucky guys have blown some teams out but they've had some close wins at least.. thought about this too; if this was a coach saying the same thing about women's basketball, they'd be thought as being sexist.

In no way could I a get a hard-on thinking of that level of athlete.....I'm just that mofo that will say what others are thinking.....that's my take on parody....

Quote:This is entertainment we're talking about. People have to decide, do I want to play 25 bucks, 30 bucks to go see a college scrum where everybody misses six out of every ten shots they take, or do I want to go to a movie? We're fighting for the entertainment dollar, here, and I have to tell you it's not entertainment from a fan's standpoint.- Quote from article

Auriemma makes some great points. He's absolutely correct about the sloppy play and poor shooting in the men's game today. IMO, the teams in men's college basketball today aren't near as good as they were 20 years ago, because the best players don't stay in school for 4 years anymore.

Today, too many schools like Kentucky have a whole roster full of "one and done" players who leave after 1-year to go straight to the NBA. Back in the 1980's and 90's, most of the great college players (Patrick Ewing, Chris Mullen, Bobby Hurley, Christian Laettner, etc..) played 4 full years in college, so you ended up with better rivalries that included more mature, physical, players. Today we have a very "watered down" college game product that quite frankly is more akin to high school quality on steroids.

Just saying, UCONN is not infallible. They lost to Stanford last year and collapsed in the NCAAs a few times over the past few years. Similar to UK's story, except without the crap years off and on.

It seems to me that women's basketball is losing many of its top athletes to other sports - primarily volleyball but perhaps soccer, softball and swimming too? It seems like there is much more parity in volleyball and that sport's elite teams have 10-12 really good, tall athletes all close to 6-0 and above. Meanwhile, women's basketball teams are lucky to have 1 or 2 truly good players. I know teams I saw 10-20 years ago were vastly superior to most of the teams I see today.

The issue to me is the club sports monopoly. Club coaches won't let their top kids play multiple sports, and the elite athletes tend to choose another sport over basketball. Maybe they prefer playing in the tighter outfits? Who knows the exact reasoning.

By the way, you could say the same thing about other sports including track and field which is a dying sport at the collegiate level (and probably high school too).

RE: OT: Geno Auriemma: Men's basketball game is 'a joke'
College ball has gotten really bad, they need to go international trapezoid in lane, and cut the shot clock down to 28.....The game just bogs down because not many teams have talent and the only way to compete against the top 10 or so teams who do is to slow the game down to a standstill and limit possessions of other team so you have a chance....

What's even worse is last second situations in college hoops....Every year continues to get worse and worse...Cannot count how many times I have watched this season (including WKU) a team only needing 2 points to win the game, waste almost every second off the clock and jack up an off balance three that's is not even close to going in...That to me summarizes college basketball and lack of fundamentals for many of these guys....

One item I don't understand is people who criticize NBA play and are "college basketball guys"...If you are desperate to see good shooters watch the NBA sometimes, its refreshing to see guys who actually can knock down shots....I know its not as evident in regular season but yes they do play defense too in the NBA...

just in numbers lost to 'chasing guys' and hormones is why women's sports will only serve as a novelty over the course of time....

it's just the way dna plays the game...

before the flogging begins....I didn't write the code....

RE: OT: Geno Auriemma: Men's basketball game is 'a joke'
I look at his statement under the surface, Auri is trying to bring some attention to Women's College Basketball which is sorely boring and dominated by one team. From a national perspective, he knows the women's game is looked upon as a joke and unfortunately it is.

But it keeps the spotlight on college basketball so some press is better than none at all.

That's true, but I don't thing the men's game is much different. Both sports have their bluebloods.

He threw that in as a cheap concession to critics.

I was surprised that the AAC board didn't have a thread on this.

There was one good ESPN user comment on this matter, if a men's coach said that about women's basketball, he would be roasted and calls for his head would ensure.

D-III men's basketball is more entertaining than women's basketball played at any level.

For those who did not watch the post-season NIT, the 30 second clock helped (26-28 would be better)...the charge arc of one extra foot was immaterial...use the suggestions for WKU518, cut timeouts to 3 (I work TV and radio, they get enough breaks already)...my biggest pet peeve is the time-honored adage 'players adjust to the whistles', no they don't they keep fouling/grabbing/hooking/shoving, the refs call the fouls, the crowds blame the refs...the NABC needs to teach its coaches and players to clean-up the play especially on screen pick-and-rolls.
