It would be a good hire for the Tide and it is a better/more winnable gig.

How exactly is Alabama more winnable than Minnesota? Is it because the SEC is terrible at basketball overall? Because Minnesota was ranked this year, Alabama.....was Alabama.

If anything, it would be better only because of the weather but the downside would be that he would have to deal with the Alabama culture.

Alabama basketball is not an upgrade from Minnesota unless they are willing to pay more.

And the only way they would be able to pay more is if Alabama is willing to divert football money to fund basketball. Fat chance.

Hel...I think one could debate the pros and cons of each. They seem about even to me...however, Bama will pay.

SEC fans tolerate hoops as a diversion before Spring FB. They are mostly ignorant about hoops but deep down they all want to have Top 10 programs to keep up with the Joneses.

At some point, as the money starts to pile up, you run out of football related things to spend it on. We have to be getting close to that point.

RE: Pitino to Alabama???...
Why is it better? Basketball recruiting is not equivalent to football recruiting. Just look at the Minnesota roster and where Pitino gets his guys from.

http://www.gophersports.com/sports/m-bas...l-mtt.html

Those kids come there to play for Pitino but also to play in a top league, just like how kids travel to the Southeast to play in the SEC as it is perceived as the top football league.

As I said, the only thing they could possible provide that would put Alabama above Minnesota would be money. Take a look at how much money the Minnesota Athletic Department makes though. They could fight that fight if Alabama tried that route.

In history-
Alabama been to the tourney 20 times, with 20 wins. 6 sweet 16's
Minnesota been to the tourney 12 times, with 13 wins. 3 sweet 16's and a final 4

Also, Minnesota just looking was never ranked this year.

It is much easier to win in Basketball in the SEC...in the B1G you have to get past Michigan, Michigan State, Indiana, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Maryland...in the SEC it is basically Kentucky and Florida...07-coffee3

You have to give the SEC credit in this....they are really investing in Basketball:

Bruce Pearl to Auburn
Ben Howland to Mississippi State
Rick Barnes to Tennessee
Maybe Richard Pitino to Alabama after going after Gregg Marshall

Alabama culture, Minnesota culture, Alabama culture, Minnesota culture, Alabama culture, Minnesota culture. At first I thought the only advantage for Alabama was their weather. My bad!

How so? They love basketball in the Midwest, even if Minnesota is a historic underachiever. Alabama is worse than Texas when it comes to being football first.

If reports are true, Bama is willing to pay a large sum for a good coach. Rumor has it they've offered Marshall 4.2M.
