I played in the 89 game. We had in a couple games prior around 20,000. Im not sure that there wasnt more than 25,000 at the 89 game. They had added bleaches above the student side and more in the endzone. Looked like ants overflowing a mound. I was shocked when they announced only 25,000 after that game.

TXST top 10. Current capacity 30,008. Before 2012 the capacity was 20,050 and before 2010 it was 15,600.

1.Sept. 8, 2012 Texas Tech 33,006
2.Sept. 13, 2014 Navy 32,007
3.Sept. 28, 2013 Wyoming 22,150
4.Sept. 7, 2013 Prairie View A&M 20,136
5.Oct. 26, 2013 South Alabama 18,140

UTA__________15,000_____________18,033 (North Texas Sept 6, 1980)

When I lived in Dallas, I went see the Cajuns play at UTA around 1980. Thanks for the info

I actually took a couple of Electrical Engineering and a Fortran programming classes there in 1980

Dallas Morning News headline the following Sunday:

"UTA's Mavs do little moving as Cajuns rage to 30-13 victory"

7,156 saw UTA's fifth loss in as many tries at their new stadium which opened that year.

What did you think of the stadium then. I know what it is now, but am curious what independent folks think of the stadium, especially when it had that new car smell.

That score sounds familiar, I had a couple of my friends drive up for that game. That was the stadium I went to. It was small. We actually sat by the cajun band below the press box.

Now that I think about it, why were we sitting on the side with the press box. We had a blast, I remember that much.

Now I know why, because my one friend sat in the press box because he had a press pass because he wrote for the Lafayette newspaper. This is the Stadium I went to. Not sure if it was the new one or not but it sure brings back good memories.

small Compared to Cajun Field

Well, every stadium back then was smaller. Cajun Field sat just 26,000 then when it opened. Now for sure, it was still the smallest stadium in the conference, but it was one of the more amenity-filled and player-friendly when it opened.

It will need a lot of work for it to get up to modern FBS standards. But I like the more intimate atmosphere.

it probably wont need as much work as you think. it is used pretty often. was built with enough lighting for tv, has a newly remodeled weight room/locker areas, and the surface gets replaced every so often. that blue section is chairback seating. when the stadium was built I bought 4 seats in the blue area about halfway up. it is all concrete construction nothing cheesey. they would need to add seating tho and over the years they have repurposed some of the parking so some fans would have to park a few blocks away if there was a good crowd for anything.

I believe UH is away but yea in 2016 when they play in San Marcos it should make at least number 3 on the list. And I think the capacity was 16,000 before the expansion.

Seating capacity would have to double. Original plans called for the stadium to be built to 26,000, but if it is built to the same quality as the rest of the stadium, there is a lot of money in just that.

The first study for revival back in 2004 called for a field house to be completed at one of the end zone ends. That was before College Park Center opened and most of the athletic staff relocated there from the Gilstrap and the baseball and softball teams had their own clubhouse, so I don't know if the space is needed or not like it once was. There still have to be room for a soccer squad, so my guess is there would.

My idea would be to build a field house, have suites in it and then put seating on top of that and knock out a few things at once.

I think more than anything, it is facility that is holding back the revival. There's double-digit millions that will be needed at the stadium, let alone space for practice space.

I don't know where I came up with 20,050. Adding 450 to 15,600 isn't 20,050. Left my brain somewhere else.

What surprises me is that you guys haven't played football in how long??? Yet the turf still has the Mavricks painted in the end zones. Get that team restarted already so we can end all the addition talks. I think we would all be happy with UTA as a football member. You would think that would have been part of bringing you guys into the SBC originally. Bring you guys in, but you have to start football, soon.

Turf was replaced in 2009...Yup.

I'm still convinced there is more going on behind the scenes than we know.

This report was from 2004/5, some of the things it says needs to be done has been done. Surprised nothing else has been released over the last 10 years.

http://www.uta.edu/sportsexpansion/

Now with COA, it is going to be harder for schools to justify starting football.

Sometimes it makes more financial sense to build a new stadium in a location that's highly visible to the public than keep patching up a 35-year-old facility which will need major structural overhaul and engineering design revisions in decades to come. The Mav Stadium--like the baseball and softball fields--is somewhat isolated on the west campus with few apartments and no dorms nearby. The administration has practically ignored that side of the campus for the last 20 years. My thinking is that students, alumni and the Arlington community need to be constantly reminded that UTA has a football team (hypothetically). The stadium needs to standout and be in everyone's conscience instead of receding into the background. Athletic facilities are all over the place and lack the centralized proximity that most universities have. What failed in 1985 will repeat itself if the administration follows the same strategy as it did then. I would think collaborating with the city to build a hybrid football/soccer stadium and luring FC Dallas from dull Frisco to play in Arlington might be a possibility. Just my thoughts.

Agree with everything but the last sentence, but its irrelevant for what is at stake.

There were more problems with the athletics department than just the location of the stadium. I get into a lot of that here, http://themaverickrambler.blogspot.com/2...ball.html, so I won't rehash, but I do think a stadium at the south 40 lot would be a great idea.

If the U looked for the best spot in 1978 instead of just the cheapest spot on campus, I think they really would have drawn more. CPC is the most visible athletic venue on campus and it isn't a coincidence that attendance has jumped 150% for basketball games.

UTA could tear down the visitors stands and still have one of the best track and field venues in the southwest.

I dont agree. the football stadium is basically at the end of greek row. that area has not been ignored. the school built a glass blowing studio there a few years ago and the football stadium is the location of a major shuttle pick up and parking area. they tore down the old maverick village where the football players lived and as I recall, there are putting greens and other golf related practice areas there. the school operates a large greenhouse and landscaping facility there. the stadium was well built and I don see any reason it cant be updated and enlarged other than some of the parking area has been repurposed over the years.

From the pics, it seems to be plenty of room around the stadium for additions. If done well with a good master plan, it should be easy to add on to what is currently there and, over time, have a very nice stadium.

The student population density is very low. Most of the development has beeen warehouse-style auxiliary structures and storage facilities. Even the eight Greek houses there sleep no more than 200 students.

FWIW

Liberty:
Largest Crowd: 19,314 against Savannah State in Williams Stadium, 10/2/10
Capacity: 19,200

EKU:
22,700 Western Kentucky Sep. 18, 2004 L 21–8
This is the only attendance record in the top 10 that has occurred since the 80's, so I'm not counting games from the 70's or 80's.
Capacity: 20,000

JMU:
25,102 against Central Connecticut on September 10, 2011.

Here's why I say that it is isolated.

How many students take blowing glass? Of those, how many are likely to go to a football game? Same thing with greens, greenhouse, landscaping, etc.

How many students use the 689-space parking lot as a park and ride?

I got my masters in city planning and urban design from this very University and it is in that vein where I see the problem. You have to be in that very area to see the stadium. There are some houses on Greek Row that can't even see it. There are no major academic buildings like the Fine Arts Building, University Hall, Wolff Hall, etc.

The majority of students spend there time east of Nedderman Dr and the vast majority are certainly east of Summitt. The stadium is non-existent to them. By putting on the south 40 lot on Cooper, just about everyone sees it.

I was hoping the U would build more apartments like they did with Arbor Oaks, Timber Brook or Meadow Run, but even those are just 450 units.

The same applies to the baseball and softball fields too.

For the record, I'm not advocating building a new stadium, but I do recognize a deficiency in the location of the older one.

I'm still convinced there is more going on behind the scenes than we know.

I envy universities with well-designed campuses and a centralized athletic facilities which allow on-campus residents (students without cars) to easily migrate to any game, any time, very quickly.

a new stadium on the south 40 would be cool but I dont see the university coming up with the money for that and 2 new womens sports and the funds for the restart of football. I could see them adding a section on each end of the current stadium and then redoing the east side seating. football games are only 4 or 5 during the fall and I dont think being a few blocks away is a big deal. when we had football, the band would march from the music bldg. down greek row to the stadium picking up fans along the way and that was pretty cool. there may not be a large number of students living in the frat houses but that area became party central on game days. with a track team that every now and then is ranked, it seems that a track specific facility would also be on the list and if they took up the track from maverick stadium they could add several rows of seats.
