No surprise, but it seems like location matters to fans. Very few people listing schools more than 500 miles away.

That's because, when it comes down to it, fans want to play schools they are familiar with. Schools that they can drive to to watch games, schools that recruit their area, schools that have fans in the local area that make rivalries that much more fun.

4 states, relatively easy travel . . . . .
The two I mainly disagree with are UNT and NMSU.
Now, before any UNT guys get all up in arms... UNT doesn't move the needle in San Marcos (much like I'm sure Texas State doesn't move the needle in Denton). I'd rather have SMU which is in the metroplex to make easier flights, and closer to us/stAte.
NMSU doesn't make sense to us because they are still 700+ miles away. I'd rather grab a school a bit more eastern (like USM) who can help keep travel tight in the eastern part.
What made you pick UNT over say SMU, or NMSU over a few different options?

I think you have to have a good mix of a spread, but close knit. You don't want to be too centralized (I'd hate to be in a conference with 5 other Texas schools), but you don't want to be totally spread out where the closest road game is an 8 hour flight.
You want to get that happy medium where you can get a regional broadcast, get exposure in multiple states/metropolitan areas, have a diverse talent pool, and still be close enough so that at least one of the road games is driveable for the students.

6. Marshall (former conference rival)
I second this, though I might sub Charlotte for Georgia State.
This (including the internal debate between UNCC and GaSt) is what I intended to type when I clicked to open this thread.

UNT hates us, thinks that they're way too good to be in a conference with us, is located close to the metroplex, and over time, I feel would be a good rivalry game. Their FB and BB facilities are pretty good, they'd need to add baseball . . .
Plus, I kinda like Denton . . . a little like SM, but without the river, good live music scene and a great annual Jazz Fest every April.
NMSU? You really asking ME that? remember: "NMSU for ALL sports?"
Actually, I love traveling to NM. . . . More the Northern half of the state, but there's just something about NMSU that I kinda like, maybe it's just the fact that no one else seems to want 'em, if they'd given me 7, I'd add UTEP as a travel partner for NMSU.

While we're dreamin', I wouldn't mind:
TX ST - UTSA
UNT - TULSA
NMSU - UTEP. Or RICE - HOUSTON
ARK ST. - MO. ST
ULL. - LA TECH
USA. - S. MISS

I actually think this would be awesome. For a while, anyway. Maybe sub Savannah State for VSU.
I think my six would be:
us
GS
Troy
USA
App
Charlotte
I could sub ECU for one of the NC schools, or drop NC/AL and include Memphis and MTSU. I really like the idea of three states, two schools apiece for some reason.
