Let me be clear, I know two of the BOR and have spoken to them numerous times about the football program; there is no interest in killing the football program, they have stated time and time again that they will keep spending money to find a winner. They would consider it a giant embarrassment to lose the program and that it will ultimately hurt the reputation of the University. They also believe that if and when EMU produces a winner it will be a great story in college football. You might want to up your meds a little bit, honestly reading this forum everyday has become depressing with all the doom and gloom. I'm sick of hearing about peoples resume with EMU football; we get it they have been bad for a long time, they are still bad, hopefully one day they won't be bad. But guess what, the negativity doesn't help, constantly crying doesn't help. Its another beautiful spring day, get outside breathe the fresh air, take a stroll and try for one day to not be a whiny baby.

I was just questioning the timing. She herself has said she wasn't going to rest until we go to a bowl game and the stadium is filled and then a year later she resigns? Why would she lie at the CC press conference? She didn't sound like a short timer then. I don't want to come off as "Overly Paranoid Rob Lowe" but what the hell is going on? Why is she leaving? Why now?

Amen to be emydpo and sam on this one.
During the last nine months I have spent some not insignificant amount of time with senior leaders of our athletic department.
I have a pretty good handle on what is happening within the Convo.
If I put out this question (with 3 possible answers):
Will EMU spend in the near future:
a). More money on athletic facilities,
b). Same amount of money on athletic facilities as now,
c). Less amount of money on athletic facilities as now.
The 'answers' were framed to suggest: Growth or Status Quo or Downsizing.
Make your pick: A, B, or C. (there is no D: "All of the above" Lol.).

Dear Bob,
Did you read my post about possible reasons for her leaving? And I will agree that they are just possible, however, the present Board of Regents position on the EAA, is doing more damage to Eastern than losing football seasons, in my opinion.
When you have school districts refusing to take on student teachers from Eastern, because of the appointed shills (as I call them), then that is a real problem for Eastern. President Martin is probably just tired of dealing with a board that has no vision, and has been very contrary to some of the programs for which she has advocated.

Absolutely, downsizing or dropping FB would marginalize this university no end.
It would be a PR disaster of Biblical proportions...

There is nothing to be gained by dropping down.

RE: Susan Martin resigning
Its not an easy time to a university president. We have those in this country who are against any time of academic freedom and the rights of those who teach us. College funding is cut in the name of tax breaks today instead of investment in our children's future and a college degree each year is beyond the means of many middle class parents and children. Much like in the Middle Ages only what is considering politically correct can be taught even if its totally factually wrong. We have those who like Hilter did with Germany's history would re write our history to make it fit their agendas. I would not be surprised in the future if we see some extremists going back and burning books. Tolerance and goodwill seem to be replaced with targeting and finding scapegoats to blame our society's problems on only the ones target and scapegoated are the most vunerable in our society. We need to constantly be on guard against those who agenda is against free thought, free expression and free speech. Colleges are for learning and teaching not to be folded in an political manifesto.

You started strong. A couple of sentences I agreed with. (Would have added, relevant to this thread, that universities are large institutions and with it comes many challenges, including BOR).
Then political manifestos, Hitler, etc. and at that point I was lost.
I was trying to relate Dr. Martin, EMU, BOR, etc. to experiences 75 years ago in Germany...
I don't see universities much different today then when I was a student.
Biggest difference: the states don't put up nearly as much $ as they did 25 or 50 years ago and mom and dad (or the student) are putting up a lot of $.

RE: Susan Martin resigning
She will have been president for 7 years (June 2008 to June 2015), perhaps she has just grown tired of the often political position of being university president (juggling the responsibility of working with the State and the BOR) and just wants to be a professor - after all, she has always been a very student oriented person. Everything in this thread has been pure speculation. No doubt she has her reasons and has found peace with her decision. Here is a direct quote from her, βIn December, I started thinking about what I want to accomplish with the rest of my career β what is the next chapter? It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as President but it is time to move forward with my life to new challenges and opportunities.β I think we should take her at her word.
