Ga. Southern set to hire new women's basketball coach
Press conference tomorrow to announce hiring of Kip Drown. He was the coach for the past 10 years at Colorado-Pueblo. He is a veteran coach (I think 58 years old) who has been a women's head coach for many years.

I figured we were going for someone with head coaching experience this time. He has a massive job to get Ga. Southern women's program competitive in the Sun Belt. Hopefully he can get here, hit the ground recruiting and get us at least decent in this sport.

With the way women's hoops performed this year, the top of the conference will be hard to crack, especially in his first year. May be tough to watch at times next year.
When we first hired Brodhead a few years ago, we saw little improvements in the W column, but you could see a foundation being built. Be patient, and look for the little things.
But I hope he works out for you guys/gals. Need all teams at all schools to step up. Ya'll particularly need to in softball and women's bball.

Not really fair to criticize softball for one down year. We've been to the NCAA tournament 2 out of the last 3 years and won the SoCon regular season title the other year.

It is fair when you're 8-25 and 1-11 in conference. This isn't the cupcake SoCon anymore. Time to step it up.

We did fairly well OOC the last few years if I'm remembering correctly as well. One year does not a trend make.

Truth hurts. Definitely a step up in competition. I know our coach is already feeling the heat seeing the basketball coach get fired after three bad seasons.

I realize the Belt is a good softball conference, but a big part of our drop off in softball from last year has more do with the loss of one pitcher (who will likely be in our Athletics Hall of Fame in 10 years) than it does the better schedule.

From 2012-2014 if we were playing a top 20 team we knew we had a good chance to win if we could just score 1 or 2 runs even though our lineup wasn't overly spectacular. She was that good.

RE: Ga. Southern set to hire new women's basketball coach
I am not a big fan of women's sports but I would like to at least be competitive in them. Our women's sports teams this year have not done very well at all-- that is a fact. Women's basketball, volleyball and possibly softball may not even make the conference tourney, which means we were below #8 in every one of these sports.

Football and baseball are the 2 sports I am most interested in as are probably most GS fans but we at least want competitive teams in the other non-revenue sports, including the women's sports.

Our AD obviously wants better also as we canned the women's basketball coach after last year. Our softball coach, even though she has 3 good years on her resume before this year, is beginning to come under some heat as well.

So you're team's performance was mainly dependent on one player? That doesn't constitute a good program. And now that she isn't playing for you guys anymore, I think that is showing this year.

Forgive my laziness, as I don't feel like looking it up, but what were y'all conference records like prior to her coming to your program?

We were definitely not a SoCon power. We joined the SoCon in 1992 and I believe we had one title from then until 2012.

I'm not claiming we have a strong program at all (we really don't) but I'm saying that we are definitely not where we were from 2012-2014.

In some sports the SoCon was somewhat comparable to the Sun Belt. In softball the Sun Belt is way better. Both us and App have a long way to go to become more competitive in Belt softball. I think in general in women s sports I think the Belt is a good bit better than the SoCon.

Now if only the rest of the conference can field a women's football team so that Georgia State can have someone to play.
