Yard question
Went to tractor supply yesterday, they only had two workers so there wasn't much help. Anyway they suggested 2,4-d for weeds so we got it. Yard has been over taken by them. Anyway, it looks like it is only for broadleaf weeds. Anyone know what to get for the grassy weeds? Or am I reading wrong and the 2,4-d should cover me?

RE: Yard question
The best thing for spraying weeds is MSMA. It will leave an orange spot that will take a while for the grass two grow back but it will kill the weeds. I had a terrible problem with nut grass when I lived in OB with a brand new sodded lawn. I asked a guy at Home Depot the easiest way to get rid of it and he said to move.

That's true.
And they're making it harder to get the things that actually work on stuff like that. Cancer causing. Whatever... Give me the strongest stuff available and hopefully Jesus will wear a resiprator. If not, natural selection is working well...

RE: Yard question
MSMA, which worked great, is no longer available to consumers. Lawn services can still get it...I think. 2,4-d is your best bet for weeds. Get 2,4-d with crabgrass control and that will also get some weedy grasses. You will also need to do another application in about 3 weeks for best results.

RE: Yard question
Thanks yall!! I will look I to something with mama I. It. I don't believe what we got has anything for grassy weeds, but I'm not sure. It did say 400 weeds so who knows, right now I'm too lazy to go out to the garage to look

I was going to do another round in a couple of weeks since it rained later Sunday after the application. I know it says two applications max per year but our yard is pretty heavy in weeds so I will probably do a cpl of applications during the summer. I'm sure I will have to change up my approach during fall and winter but I will figure that out when I get there. But if yall have any pointers I'm all ears. Thanks again yall.

One more thing, do you guys think I should do some sort of fertilizer once the grass starts getting green? The guy said no, but I know I need to thicken the grass up to suffocate the weeds.

Pay no mind to apartment dwellers' opinions on lawn care

I should also mention that weeds around the fenceline... my mechanic always suggested that I use the old gasoline from last year's lawnmower supply... that'll do the trick everytime!

gas works on a lot of things, I had a stubborn family of ants that kept moving around every time I put the AMDRO down. Finally poured some gas down there. They left my yard. It's so dry in Texas that they move into the lawns where the sprinklers are.

haha. awesome.

Yeah I saw a large anthill in mine yesterday... not normal for round these parts... not one that big.

would it be obvious if I stood over it with a mower turned upside down?

In other news, my dad was so agains the green movement he would sneak out at night and pour his used cooking oil into the sewer. heh. He was one of a kind my old dad...

He was awesome. Mom started using the recycling bin after he passed away. I, therefore, intentionally throw aluminum cans and glass bottles in the trash when she's not looking when I'm there.

...as an honor to my old man.

I had this concersation yesterday.
him: that went right to the river when he poured the oil in the sewer
me: seen that river lately? would you swim in it?

uh oh...that reminded me of a true story. In the 80s, I worked in a health food store a couple blocks from the U.C med center in SF where they used all the cutting edge drugs for experimentation.

All sorts of research people and other UC employees shopped there. I did one of 'em a favor, so he gave me some cutting edge experimental X that the psychiatrists were using in group therapy sessions, and of course I tried it...and without much thought. lol. Bravery and fool went hand in hand back then.

It was interesting....but not my thang. I mean who wants to 'unconditionally' love the whole word for three days and come back down to the fact that some folks ain't worth it. 04-chairshot

RE: Yard question
2,4D is for broadleaf weeds only. I am an old farm boy, and MSMA is good on a bermuda lawn to kill competing grasses. If you have another lawn grass, though, it could be a disaster.

I have been through training at the farmer's Co-oP in the past to be a licensed chemical applicator. However, now I just hire a lawn service. They have access to the right chemicals and the right equipment to apply them.

As far as fertilizer, the ideal is to pull a soil sample and sent to UT for soil analysis. They will tell you what your needs are in terms of N (nitrogen), P (phosphate), and K (potash). You may also need lime. Most West Tennessee soils do and my dad (a lifelong farmer) always said "lime is the cheapest fertilizer you can use". Again, a soil sample will let you know your need for lime. Without a sample, you are just guessing. This link will get you started.
