The boost in donations to the Owl Club started when Jim Harris was named as the first Executive Director. After Jim left John Greer continued his work but since that time less and less focus was placed on the social aspect of the Owl Club. Quite a few non alum fans/donors got their start by going to Owl Club functions such as the QB and RBI club. It was a way where these new fan/donors had a chance to become part of the University. Besides the Coaches Meetings the Owl Club used to sponsor trips to away games. During the WAC years trips were made to BYU, Air Force, and New Mexico . Flights to the game on commercial airlines, hotel accommodations, and often a dinner was part of the package. During the BYU trip the Owl fans got to have dinner at Robert Redford's restaurant at the Sundance Mountain Resort.

My description of the Owl Club these days is an organization that is primarily a "money drop". The R room availability during football games is just about the only social function that is still provided. Just as the response to Mike's FB post has shown connecting folks with an interest in Rice athletics can lead to new members to the Owl Club and an increase in donations from current members.

Would agree, donated 1K a few months back, believe I received a cap and a brochure, then never here from them until its time for another donation. Living in Hawaii not likely will get to attend many events but communication is always a good idea.

Dr. K will be providing his mid-year report to Owl Club supporters on Saturday, April 18th, and I would expect he will send out a communication (similar to his vision brochure) shortly thereafter.

Its just frustrating. We want more people to care, that includes Texans, Americans, former expats and international students. The latter isn't likely to happen if they feel like we're a hostile bunch.

Just struck a nerve - it came off as "the immigrants come here and steal our jobs" and I feel that, as Rice University, we are past that.

Tiki has voiced an issue/complaint that I have had ever since DB and whomever was AD at the time AXED the Monday evening QB Club. QB Club was my Kiwanis, my Rotary Club, and I miss it tremendously. Believe me, Frankie B is standing by, ready to cater up Confederate House chicken fried steak every week if need be, to shore up attendance. I for one stand ready to re-up and bring along four new members if we reinstate. If 50 people do that, it's enough to support a relatively thriving membership. I don't give a darn if DB doesn't want to stand up in front of alums and take post game questions once a week. Let him do it once amonth. Send the OC and the DC the other two weeks, and Dr. JK the fourth week of the month. Times three and you have the requisite 12 meetings. The radio show is a joke. I went the first time. That was it.

Its not like I keep track of it real close. When i contributed to the annual drive, I also made a separate contribution, not sure if they have my email.

My plan for next year is to buy 2 season tix for mens BB, hopefully make a couple games, and donate the rest for families staying at Ronald McDonald House, which I believe is near the Med Center. Will still make Owl Club donation.

I'm sure you are there, but he has a radio show every week, and as far as I've seen he shakes every hand in the place and answers every question asked - if not on air then man to man - and different players and assistants are there. The QB club was great, but was going to end anyway. The hard fact is that anyone new/young to that club was not welcome. Hate away, but that's a general problem with our support network as well.

Not to be a jerk, but when you say "coaching staff," do you now mean "couching staff"? Cuz I don't know what that is.

Many thanks to those who have contributed and those who have upped their pledge. Each gift goes a long way into continuing to build the Rice University Athletic Program. We are really pushing to up our participation levels this year, so please feel free to invite your friends to join the effort as well. No gift is too small to count towards participation.

GO OWLS!

The goal for this year is $2.1 MM and we currently have a little bit more than $1.8 MM accounted for. The $1.8 MM number is from mid-March, so thanks to some of the new contributions and upped commitments mentioned on this thread we may actually be a little bit closer. Thanks again for considering a gift to the Owl Club!

Apologies if this was in the thread and I missed it, but what are the "aggressive goals" and is there anything in particular you have to do to count toward the matching funds when making a donation? Thanks.

What is the time frame for this?

I need to confirm, but I believe the cutoff is June 30.

Yes, as with the Annual Fund, it's the academic calendar year-- July 1 - June 30.
