Thanks for the link. The more I hear from Coach Forbes and from people who know him, the more excited I am about the future.

RE: Welcome, Coach Forbes
Kenny Hawkins's made a comment on the Morning Monster yesterday that shows he didn't attend that many ETSU games.
Bobby was very interested in the wild applause that broke out when Forbes said he played man to man and didn't even know
how to coach zone. He asked Forbes if it had been the players (Forbes said he was surprised to but didn't really know who was clapping)
and then yesterday he asked Kenny. Kenny said the whole room erupted but that it surprised him because he didn't really remember Bartow
playing that much zone.. Really Kenny?

RE: Welcome, Coach Forbes
I’ll start by saying I am not that familiar with ETSU, but I am now a Bucs fan. I've known Coach Forbes since 1993 and was excited to hear about this hire. I’ll cheer for him wherever he goes. He is a great guy, doesn't bull****, and builds a solid relationship with his players and fan base. He is extremely approachable and even more passionate about the game.

Having said that, I saw several things in this thread that I thought I would add to.

The first was “barbs” about zone and running plays. I assure you, HCSF doesn't throw barbs in this way. “we will play man to man defense!” "don't know how to coach zone", and “Recruit offense and teach defense” are things he’s been saying since early in his career. That’s his coaching style and always has been. That has nothing to do with the former coach\system. That was not a “change meter” for the fans. That was Forbes being Forbes.

Secondly – what types of players is he going to recruit. Burger King boys that want to kick mcdonalds boys asses. That couldn't be more correct. IMO he likes the guys that want to play, have something to prove, and are competitors. Guys that don’t take plays off and play with tenacity. Guys that have the fire, want the ball, and want to score. Guys that can flat out score.

Enjoy the ride. I know I’ll be paying attention.

In Coach Forbes' interview with Tony Basilio (which was linked elsewhere on the forum) he said that he was surprised at the demonstration that occurred when he mentioned playing man over zone. It is clear that he did not intend to make a slap at anyone, he was just stating what he intended to do.

I heard that too, and I was shocked because he IS at every home game. Does he just not pay attention or not know basketball or what?

I think we're all sensitive to and reading into veiled comments given the last 12 years of cliches and indirectness. Forbes' apparent directness is refreshing.

Yeah, no kidding. I think we are all a little shocked to have a coach say what he means, and means what he says.

Rookie D1 Coach pulling down a bigger contract than veteran Bartow. We all wish Murry well, but I am pleased to say a BIG WELCOME TO HCSF! Glad he is signing the biggest contact of his life so far!

Is the media highlighting the pay of the new UT basketball coach, $2.25 mil a year base ($51,000 to search firm to find him)(does UT not have an AD? -- oops, forgot, he only hires crooks). If they're going to keep pounding ETSU athletics expenditures, they darn well are compelled to lift up the UT athletic expenditures to help folks keep things in perspective.

I am confused. Everyone was pissed because no one seemed to know or be able to find out how much Bartow was making and for how long and calling the media out for not reporting it. Now they are reporting it and people are saying they are trying to stir things up? As for using what Tennessee is paying Barnes compared to ETSU paying Forbes that offers no perspective, you are comparing grapes to watermelons. 2 of the 3 UT assistants make more then Forbes, one pretty close to double. (Ogden 375,000).

Yes. All the Knoxville outlets had his contract the day of the press conference.
And I'm only going to say this once so pay attention. Butch Jones isn't a crook. He's ran a clean program everywhere he's been. Dave Serrano isn't a crook. Cuonzo Martin wasn't a crook. The new swimming coach isn't a crook (the last guy was banging female swimmers 2-3 at a time in his office).
Dave Hart, Rick Hart, David Blackburn at UTC, and Scott Carter up here are cut from a mold of DOING their job vs. trying to keep their job. So is Dr. Sander. I don't always like what Dr. Sander does (firing Kemp before firing Bartow, keeping Tony Skole around, hiring that dumb*** compliance officer from Radford, promoting a child to be the SWA and another child to head up marketing), but by an large he's made the right calls. There's not been a lot of bull$#!t at UT or ETSU since the changes have been made at the top, and that's a good thing.
Hopefully the last gift Sander can give us is an arena, but to do that he's about going to have to find a billionaire to blackmail.

My point, before the complainers/uninformed come running out freaking out over $200,000, first they need to contemplate $2.25 mill at the state school down the road and note the realistic deal ETSU is getting with Steve Forbes. As for the UT AD, I read earlier that he would not be hiring the next basketball coach -- instead, relying on a search firm. The "crook" comment -- nothing but a joke and was referring to the former basketball coach which Hart did hire but said he wanted nothing to do with hiring his replacement. Yes, it is keeping things in perspective, $200,000 vs $2.25 mil at two state schools, although vastly different financially, to the average Joe Blow who doesn't know jack squat about NCAA DI basketball costs and/or major/power 5 conferences vs mid-major conferences financing and expenditures. And, there seems to be a bunch of knuckle heads around spouting off all the time about the money ETSU athletics spends (not on here) -- - even the media sometimes falls into that mindset. Note: Steve Forbes is a deal in the real world of college athletics.

For round #s sake, multiply 1000 tickets by $10. You get $10,000. Now multiply that by 15 home games. Sounds like $150,000. Looks like Forbes will pay for himself if attendance gets back to what it should be or more. Hell, he might even pay for Murry! What happens in Knoxville is irrelevant.

Well said. Coach Forbes will probably pay for himself and his assistants also. If the team shows success and gets some tv games who knows what the revenue will be? The Press and local media always want to present how much money ETSU spends on athletica as if it were a lot of money. In Division 1 basketball I think Coach Forbes salary is very resonable and we are getting a wonderful deal. Of course we cannot compete with the giga-money school down the road but that is not our role. Bucs are making all the right moves now and we could not be prouder.
