who was the last hoops coach that was fired for on-court performance at one program and then had major success elsewhere? I can't think of anyone offhand.

Tubby Smith got fired from Kentucky and then brought Minnesota to the tourney 3 years out of 5. He won them their first NCAA tourney victory since 1990. Not huge success, but better than the Gophers were used to. I'm still not sure why Minnesota fired him.

In football, Gene Chizak would have qualified - if he had retired after Auburn's BCS championship season. He just happened to stick around long enough for Auburn to find out Gus Malzhan was responsible for all his success. He sure didn't have any before he got to Auburn.
