It sucks for JMU but it is what it is.

RE: VA bill limiting athletic fees for public Universities becomes law
This part was more interesting than the numbers - "JMU has been contemplating a move into FBS. If the school decides to move up prior to July 1, 2016, it would not need approval from the commission. Any decision made after that date would need commission approval."

Looks like a 15 month window for the Dukes.

Already under the cap by moving the Marching Royal Dukes to an academic expense from athletic.

http://www.breezejmu.org/news/article_74...26a13.html

We have until 7/1/16 to do something on our own volition. Liberty fans may see this as a good thing, but in my mind, it will force JMU's administration to make a move while they still can.

Also, our recently released athletic strategic plan listed this nugget: "Implement comprehensive plan to strengthen JMU Athletics brand nationally - 06.30.2015", which just so happens to be the deadline to reclassify.

Not sure there's really much here that JMU's administration wasn't already aware of.

There isn't. Cox is a JMU grad, and was heavily involved in discussions with JMU prior to the bills's introduction.

It can be looked at in 2 ways. 1: It is a cover NOT to move to FBS, or 2: Cover to make the move to FBS ie. We had to move now or lose the chance to make our own decisions.

If it was cover NOT to move, why the 15 month reprieve and 6/1/16 deadline?

Will this REALLY stir JMU to act? Seems doubtful. No evidence.COA issues may have squashed consideration?

Here we go again. Another spring of speculation. I believe jmu would get the votes to join if they applied. But I have seen very little to show that jmu has interest.

COA is a total unknown. It could very well have forced our hand...I don't know. I do know that the majority of the G5 will struggle with COA as well, so I don't know if that changes anything for us.

Here is the strategic plan. It is totally nebulous, and we don't really know WHAT JMU plans to do, even after a 30 month strategic planning process. Pretty amazing, but what do you expect when you have a lawyer for a President? lol

If JMU makes a move, I'm in favor of bringing them in for the very next season as a non-football member so they avoid CAA tourney bans in all sports and then having football join the following year after the reclassification year.

What this also does is puts pressure on Old Dominion. With COA and other benefits, unless they really up the revenue, they won't meet the requirement. And perhaps in order to meet it they won't be able to offer COA, food, and other benefits.

ODU is evidently closing in on the 55% just from increased conf. payouts and guarantees. Also looks like they got the funding for their new stadium excluded from the calculation.

COA for G5 schools will be interesting. No way G5s can compete with the big boys financially. We all know that.

They were closing, but the COA and other stuff hasn't been added to that calculation and would trend farther from that than getting closer.
They do have a generous timeline to meet the 55% but CFP and other payouts are enough to offset the additional costs unless they don't offer COA and other benefits.

That would be just fine with me. Makes our situation a lot less complicated.

Might leave some unhappy boosters in certain SBC cities though.
