FB/BB coach combo
Just saw a picture of Dantonio and Izzo seeing each other after the win by Izzo yesterday to get to the final 4...

Is there a better FB/BB coach combo than those 2?

just thinking some candidates- other final 4 coaches:
Coach K/Cutcliffe @ Duke
Ryan/Chryst @ Wisconsin
Calipari/Mark Stoops @ Kentucky

others:
Matta/Meyer @ Ohio St
Krueger/Bob Stoops @ Oklahoma

I'm thinking Michigan St and it's not all that close.

Hard to argue against Michigan State for sure.

Arizona should also be in the conversation, as well as Notre Dame (down the list a bit, though).

Arizona with Miller and Rich Rodriguez is interesting- down a bit though to me...

think an underrated combo now may be in Auburn with Malzahn and Pearl.

RE: FB/BB coach combo
A sportswriter mentioned on Twitter earlier that until firing Mack Brown, Texas had gone the longest with the same FB/MBB head coaching pair in FBS (Barnes and Brown both hired in 1998).

Currently, BYU has gone longer than any other FBS school since last changing FB or MBB head coaches (Mendenhall and Rose both hired in 2005).

I think you could make a real serious case for Ohio St. Meyer much better football coach than Izzo or Pitino, and Matta is right up there with Dantonio and Petrino I think.

Pitino took Providence, Kentucky and Louisville to the Final Four and won NCAA Titles at Kentucky and Lousville and is in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame...Meyer is Great but Pitino creditionals are incredible...not to mention in his first stint in the NBA the Knicks won a Division Title...7 Final Fours as a Coach with 2 Titles at Different Schools and a Atlantic Division NBA Title for the Knicks...07-coffee3

Knicks stint doesn't really count in college coaching. Meyer has 3 titles also with 2 teams. And Matta stronger than Petrino. Meyer would be in the college football hall of fame if the requirements were the same as the basketball hall of fame.

RE: FB/BB coach combo
It's almost too close to call between Michigan State and Louisville, IMO.

Sean Miller is a very good coach, but can't be in this conversation until he takes a team to at least one Final Four. For that matter, a coach that has only been to one Final Four, like Kruger or Matta, should be barely at the outer edge of this discussion, given what Izzo and Pitino have done.

If you were going to include very well-respected coaches with no signature accomplishments as a head coach (like Sean Miller), then you might as well include David Cutcliffe and put Duke on your list. But I wouldn't go that far.

Matta has one Final Four in his Career...Petrino has taken two different programs to BCS/CFP Bowl Games and has also won a Cotton Bowl....Petrino had two Double Digit Regular Season Winning years at Louisville-(2004 & 2006) and Arkansas-(2010 & 2011) in the Rugged SEC West with Bama, Auburn and LSU.

Slight correction on Pitino...he is in the Main Basketball Hall of Fame with people like Moses Malone, Red Auerbach, Dr. J, Magic Johnson etc...etc.

Also, Dantonio is stronger then Matta...won the Cotton Bowl last year and the Rose Bowl the year before

Good point on Duke with Coach K & Cutcliffe.

For awhile in the late 1980s, Duke had K and Spurrier.

More recently, Florida had Donovan & Meyer.

RE: FB/BB coach combo
Ok, minimum requirements are BB coach has made it to a final 4. FB coach has won a BCS/committee Bowl. Combined At least 1 national championship at their current school, between the 2 coaches. The 3 leading candidates are

1. Ohio state
Meyer - 3 national titles at 2 different schools.. BCS bowls at 3 different schools
Matta - 2 final 4's, 1 national runner-up

2. Mich State
Dantonio - 2 BCS bowl wins
Izzo - 1 national title, 7 final 4's

3. Louisville
Petrino - BCS bowls at 2 different schools.
Pitino - 2 national championships art 2 different schools. 7 Final 4's at 3 different schools.

I think I have to give it to Ohio State. Meyer's, Izzo's and Pitino's records are all incredible, but Meyer has 3 national championships.

Dantonio and Petrino are great, but Matta has made it to the National championship game.

Winner: Ohio State

Very good breakdown...forgot about the 2nd Matta Final Four...it appears those 3 Schools are the runaway winners in the Revenue Sports Head Coaching Success Rate.

RE: FB/BB coach combo
would also add Matta has 2 more elite 8's as well(which is the equiv of a BCS bowl imo).
Izzo has 2 more.
Pitino has 5 more.

so
Ohio St- Meyer 3 titles, also 3 other BCS bowls- 2 wins/Matta 1 runner up, 2 final 4's, 4 elite 8's
Mich St- D'Antonio 2 BCS bowls-2 wins/Izzo 1 title, 1 runner up, 5 final 4's, 9 elite 8's
Louisville- Petrino 2 BCS Bowls- 1 win/Pitino 2 titles, 1 runner up, 7 final 4's, 12 elite 8's

So
Ohio St's coaches- 10 BCS/Elite 8 seasons, 3 titles
Mich St's coaches- 11 BCS/Elite 8 seasons, 1 title
Louisville's coaches- 14 BCS/Elite 8 seasons, 2 titles
